Default Best Playstation to Buy, If i have to Start All Over

I know this Question has been asked before, and the Answer is always the same, but My Optical Drive just Died, and now I'm afraid I'm gonna have to start all over, you know, New Ps3. I had a 60gb from May 2007, it was a Previously Owned, but i worked at the store I bought it from, it worked fine at testing.

Now I want to get the Most Reliable Playstation, Backwards Compatibility is not an Issue, what should I get Now? Are the Rumours of a Quieter Cooler Running 80 gb Version confirmed? Or are the Best ones already out? I seem to hear the 40 gb has problems. But what's your Opinion?

I ran across the metal gear 80 gb bundle a week ago.
I dont think its loud. there is fans but normal fans like on a computer
nothing crazy
and it comes with a ds3 controller...metal gear solid 4 and a free download of the full game of pain

I also got the extended warranty

I think its a good deal at only 100 more dollars than the 40 gb
just hard to find...well where im at it was.

Yeah, pretty sure it's just as loud as the 60 gb, and personally, I was always afraid of it exploding

I never played a 60 gb ps3
But i have played a friends 40 gb and it didnt make no noise at all
i have the 80 gb and it does have a random fan noise but it goes away
and only when playing certain games like mgs4 or uncharted for a long time
i can play motorstorm all day with no fan noise
and no noises during blu ray movies......BUT i dont play my ps3 everyday
like every other day for only 1 hour at a time
I guess im a casual gamer...but i like the good stuff like MGS4
uncharted is a good 1 too.

I have a launch 60GB and it has always been whisper quiet. If yours was really noisy, you may have had a fan problem going on which also might account for the subsequent failure.

I would send it to Sony along with info about the noise issue and let them fix it. Even out of warranty it will be cheaper than buying a new one.

My 60GB is louder than the 40GB.

Why not send it away for repair? They will charge you but its cheaper than a new PS3.

everyone has fan issues....your either sitting too close....or worried too much about it.....with the volume up and sitting appropriately away from the tv...you shouldnt notice...

I agree with this post!

$150 will get your system fixed for ya. To me, sounds better than $500 and the loss of backwards compatibility.

Call Sony -> 1-800-345-7669

That does make sense, I'm gonna go back to Future Shop, see if I've got warranty on it today, and then see what to do from there

agree, i had 60gb and my friend 40gb big difference in noise, 60gb is not just noise but heat issue, when play blu-ray or over hour, sometime the noise is lounder than speakers that is bad,

Actually, come to think of it, It's been really hot here lately, (it hit 30 degrees yesterday, outside), and the fan was really loud. So.... maybe it was heating too much, now the optical is dead, Any word on how long it may take to get it back if i send it off?

Should take at least 10-15 days. Definitely have them fix it before going and buying another new one and lose your backwards compatibility. Unfortunately, you're prolly gonna end up losing everything on your internal HD once you get it back

Mine's currently out for repair. If it's out of the warranty period you don't have to send in any receipt, so second hand / previously owned doesn't matter. $169 for the repair in Canada. It's been 10 days (including weekends and Canada day) and current status is "waiting for test". Whatever that means.

Same experience for me. My Launch PS3 (60gb) is still as quiet as a mouse.

Well I would say that the most likely culprit in this scenario is lack of proper ventilation. If not properly ventilated the PS3 will definitely heat up and thus cause the fans to work much more than they should.

I suggest reevaluating the space around your PS3, in particular the exhaust vents, but optimally all around it (as air flow helps to keep the fans from over exertion as well).
