Default HD DVD and Best Buy start new promotion!

This sucks!

Quote:
Building on previous promotions that offered five to seven free HD DVD movies with the purchase of a qualifying HD DVD player, Best Buy is now offering a total of 9 discs with a purchase of the new $399 USD Toshiba HD-A30.

The deal was first revealed in this weeks circular and ups the ante for HD bundles.

The first five movies are available via mail through the "Five free discs" promotion while two others, '300' and 'The Bourne Identity' come included with the HD-A3. The final two free movies are available at Best Buy at the point of purchase.

"It’s a good start to a [HD DVD] collection," Best Buy spokesperson Brian Lucas said.
I thought BB were siding with Blu-ray? What's going on???

Cool

BB is clearing out their shelves to fit more bluray. And nobody buys hd-dvd, so they have to give the shit away. Remember the story about the thieves? hd-dvd doesn't even get stolen

I'm not seeing the pro-Blu-Ray stuff going on at the Best Buys around here.

HD-DVD is getting most of the prime spots --

At the newest local store, the movies are right up front. They have a short, 1/2 row rack out in front. The part you see when you immediately walk in has new releases or specials out on display. On the other side of this is the Blu-Ray. No big deal until you consider that the HD-DVD is located on the next row in the unobstructed area of the next rack. The selection is about equal, but HD-DVD is more visible due to no racks being placed in front of it.

Then there's the demo displays... both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD have displays on the end, demoing a player, HD-TV and speakers hooked up to it. About 1 or 2 rows of key titles are lined up below each. However, HD-DVD is located near the main desk of the home theater department, clearly in view of everybody that's just trying to get from the main entrance to the back of the store. Blu-Ray is a few rows down, a bit out of site due to its location being not in the main walkway and being obstructed by the semi-perpendicular rows of HDTVs. Basically, not a display that somebody that wouldn't be going there for home theater purpose would be able to see unless they were looking for it.

One other Blu-Ray/HD-DVD display is available -- one of the middle-of-the-walkway units. I think maybe a bit more Blu-Ray that HD-DVD on this rack, and positioned so that as you're exiting the HD movies and TV-DVD aisle to head towards checkout, that's what you'll see. So, that's a plus...

Sunday's ad for the area -- the only Blu-Ray to be found was a small graphic of Fantastic Four. There was a huge ad for the five free movies with HD-DVD player purchase.

Then there's the new releases -- Best Buy got none of last week's new releases until this week. They did get some of this week's in this week (but Wal-Mart across the street was cheaper on all of those).

I'm not finding all this great news about expanded Blu-Ray selections in my area yet... Target, especially -- or have they not yet begun to expand their selection? It's still 50/50 here.

Exactly what I was going to say but you said it better.

They have to get this crap out of the store before they have to pay to return it. (Plus Toshiba sure as hell doesn't want it coming back.)

They are making much more shelf space for Blu Ray at mine and to reduce the shelf space for HD DVD you have to sell it or give it away and guess which one works?
