It's an -okay- system. Lots of noise for two speakers and a subwoofer, so that kinda impresses me a little. I got one for free from my work a couple years ago and I still use it.

However, it doesn't decode much and cannot provide real surround sound. It is a good system for DVD and a very subpar system for BluRay.

That's why we don't all have them. As soon as I can afford a better setup, my 321 is out.

because bose is all marketing and very little substance... i went to a bose store once and they had a theatre room to demo the setups and they just played everything really loud so you couldnt tell the sound quality... and the iPod docks are like 3x more than a klipsch or something similar and don't even sound as good.

Funny you should say that, since all I keep hearing about the "great benefit" of Klipsch speakers, are their ability to play "loud" with very little "power" being fed to them..... (they're 'efficient' god I've heard that enough times!) oh... but sure... they sound good....

I'm not a bose fan, so you can say what you like about them

Exactly! Isn't speaker efficiency the single most important indicator for speaker quality? I remember that being presented as a valid argument for Klipsch speakers. And for all these years I mistakenly relied on auditioning gear with my own ears. I guess next time I'll just seek out the highest efficiency speaker I can find on a spec sheet and call it good.

What a time saver!

As to the Bose 1-2-3 thing, I hadn't encountered an anti-Bose post in about 25 minutes, so I guess we were due.

Speaker efficiency is very funny because the top speakers that your dollar can buy are RARELY efficient.

Speakers efficiency has little to do with the quality of sound reproduction. Efficiency is just that, it's how efficient the speaker can take the signal given and turn it into sound, the less power you have to use to make the cones respond. It would take 4 times as many watts to drive a speaker with a sensitivity of 86dB than it would one with 92dB. You have to double the watts to get a 3dB increase in volume.

A sensitivity rating of 86dB means the volume level is 86dB if you're standing a meter away from the speaker and if you're providing one watt of power to the speaker.

It's kinda like wattage, just because the speakers can handle the gajillion watts does not relate to the quality of the sound being reproduced. The super eilite speakers are rarely efficient ie: 80-95dB+ but the quality of the audio is amazing.

C'mon Beta-man I thought you had the kick ass highly expensive ET sound system.
Seriously though, bottom line bose sucks.
Nothing can compare to a seperate receiver and individual speakers correctly set up right. Of good brands and high quality. You get what you pay for. For not that much money you can get a 7.1 hdmi receiver that can decode all the latest codecs, and a set of 5.1 speakers that are decent for so much less than you would pay to get HOSED.

I'm just saying, there's different strokes for different folks......

I'd never buy bose though, that's for sure

I don't particulary care for Klipsch..... but for every Klipsch fan, there's a Bose fan..... so there you have it

Short answer...My friend bought it...it sounded like shit.

Intelligent answer...Bose has made an excellent product for people who have been listening to stock rear mounted mono tv speakers their whole lives.

Upon listening to this system for the first time, the average uneducated listener is drawn in by the sound of a half way decent sub woofer and a stereo soundstage. For many people, this is their first exposure to what we'd call Imaging and they think it is phenominal.

Why it sucks:

You get loud and clear and you get bass...that is it. No matter how much money they sink into the whole "tricking your ears into surround" bs marketing campaign, you will NEVER hear surround imaging like you will when you carefully build a system made with educated well thought out (even less expensive) choices.

Stick with what you have, because I think you know what you are doing already. I posted here for those who DO NOT know what you know so that they could have some insight.

OP...enjoy your rig in good health my friend,

later,

If you're looking for a virtual surround system consider the KEF 100 Instant home theater.. although a closed syetem the dvd head/amp has an optical audio input.. not the same as a good 5 pice surround set but WAY better than a Bose 3 2 1 ..

wow... so technical. bass module, subwoofer... okay. fine. i'll play along.

It's not a true subwoofer, no, but for a bose system, that's their equivalent, I guess. Not an expert on Bose here...

lots of noise... yeah, they put out a lot for their size (and that's what she said), though I wasn't commenting that it is great quality or anything. I would rather have quality over "noise".

Bottom line - I got mine for free.

To me, bose is one of those companies that markets a lot, especially to those who have no idea what they are really buying. I see a lot of old people with bose products... eh, they're a little naive sometimes

I used to have a Bose 5.1 system way back in my college days (early 90's). This was purchased with my roommates Best Buy employee discount. It was one the acoustimass with the dual cubes. This was when I was totally uneducated regarding audio components. All I will say is you can get far superior sound reproduction for far less money with just about anything else on the market.
