Default Onkyo 605/705/805 Owners: Movie/Black screen flickers + DSP/firmware

For those who might have purchased any of these 1st gen Onk's later in the product manufacturing cycle, say like early 2008 and more recent, what is the definitive way to check your DSP chipset and verify the firmware?? I tried the press down display button and hold standby, but nothing pops up on my screen

I have both a 605 and 805 and have never encountered it. However looking up your problem I did find one person with the same issue and it was found that at some point his HDMI cable had been bent too far and was crimped and or broken inside. Is it possible yours might have been also ?

That would be fantastic if that was the case. Both cables are 1.3a and brand new [got them last week] But I will take a closer look at them. Thanks for looking into this.

Did you get firmware updates for yours??

Also had a similar problem when watching the latest Rambo - the entire picture pulled a matrix like morphing as it slowly shrunk into a small box then vanished into a blank screen & then pop -- the picture right back.

Its as if someone was pushing the input button back and forth, but the movie is definitely gone for that moment, because the TV screen shows HDMI2 in the top left corner along with "searching for signal" Total incident is like 40 seconds & back to normal. Is this something common or a problem

As mentioned above, it could be your cable. Otherwise I'm not sure if it is the TV that is strangely seeking a different signal for no reason, or if it is the receiver sending faulty signals to the TV regarding the source output.

Very interesting...

Let me guess. You have learned that it is never wise to mention the MONSTER brand anywhere in these forums!

Smart man! But, NOT smart at the same time...

lol... well i've explained it before... i dont have a credit card because i have no credit rating (i'm 18) and the only cable options I have locally are Rocketfish from futureshop, monster from my work (at about half of retail), belkin from radioshack... or cheaper "no-name" brand cables from walmart and the likes that retail for about what i get my monster for... monster is the obvious choice locally

It was really bizarre as this has never happened to me pre-Onk. The only other time this happens is when the bluray disc is first loading and it switches back and forth a couple times.

One of my cables is pretty crimped back there. I straightened it out and created a little more room and re-watched those scenes in Point Break and everything was fine.

If you think of anything else, be sure to drop a line

I did the update on the 605 but not the 805. Hopefully it was just a crimped HDMI cable.

I had a very similar problem and the cause was a HDMI cable that was too thick/stiff. I had a monoprice 24AWG that I had to switch out for a Blue Jeans 28AWG. No problems since.

I occasionally encounter the same issue when watching content from my cable box after it has been on (and or in standby) for several days. I fix it by completely powercycling the cable box.

I'm not sure what causes this to happen from a technical point of view; nor do I understand the inner workings of HDMI. I know there is a handshake at some point in time, but if you keep your gear in standby mode, does the handshake still occur? or does it rely on the initial handshake?

Anyway, I don't think anything is wrong with your receiver though. Like the others said, it may be a cable issue. Hell, that may be the case in my situation as well.

The blinking the OP is describing does sound like HDMI handshaking. I'm guessing he lost signal (hopefully due to the cable crimp) and then when it came back it had to go through that process again. If it's in standby it still has to do 'da handshake each time. I think the only exception to this would be if you left all of them in standby on the same HDMI input and didn't switch it, but I'm doubtful.

I recently updated my 705. Onkyo said I couldnt except for sending or bringing it in, a state away.....idiots! they were wrong! burnt the cd and updated it. what I remember as this was a few weeks ago was press display then stanby, then tone+ or up to see the current fw. if you burnt the update cd then after youve hit the other three buttons, then hit return to start the update with the update in a cd player hooked up with optical cable to opt. input 1. its more of a pain than that, but thats the general idea. but then thats for dsp update!

I had a similar problem (PS3/Onkyo 605/HDMI), I replaced the HDMI cable and the issue has not returned.

Right -- I will try this sequence later as its different from the way I was doing it. At this point I just want to find out what exactly my Onk is running.

I was thinking/hoping that the handshake was a different issue all together as well.
