Default Help me in a FUD discussion on another board

People are using the news about sony trying to outsource the Cell to say they are abandoning the PS3. Please. Still, I need to provide facts or its just one person vs. another.

Who is making the Cell now, and do we know who they might outsource to? Big fabs like AMD and Intel are obvoius choices, but I'm not sure if Sony has actually named anyone?

Default Hmmm

First, Sony did not develop Cell by itself, see...

http://www.research.ibm.com/cell/

Sony just builds them in one of their own Fabs because IBM, by themselves, can't keep them supplied with enough for the PS3 and other projects. (The Cell processor is just one of many, many processors IBM makes for themselves and many other customers.)

Second, the 45nm Cell processor won't be just a die shrink. IBM and others will be involved in the next generation.

Third, I have read no where, nor heard any rumors, that Sony is shutting down its current Cell Fab line.

I would expect that Sony is looking for more production capability in the 45nm regime because: a. Sony does not currenly have a 45nm Fab which can do this and it will take Sony's fabs a while to get to that point -- if they can get someone under contract to fill that gap all the better; b. Sony expects the 45nm process to lower power, etc. and thus make it possible to do a second generation PS3 and thus increase sales of PS3s; c. Sony expects the sales of PS3 to keep increasing thus they need more Fab capability than they currently have available even after they internally convert to 45nm.

All of these point to various versions of lower cost PS3s, more prevalent PS3s and higher PS3 sales.

Sony looking for more capacity in absolutely no way implies they are getting out of the gaming business. To make that leap makes absolutely no sense.

I guess that means Microsoft is also abandoning the Xbox 360, HD-DVD, Ethernet, USB, Keyboards, Mice,..since they outsource everything..

Heck maybe even Windows as well since they don't actually manufacture that themselves either.

Not to mentions DVD's that all there games are published on..WOW.
