Default HD-DVD sales figures jump explained

Evidently there was some sort of "jump" in the sales of HD-DVD discs last week... but according to The Digital Bits, this is why:

"Finally today, we've been informed by industry sources that the jump in the HD-DVD numbers in the Nielsen VideoScan data we posted yesterday (from Home Media Retailing) was not due to an increase in HD-DVD sales, but rather because the HD-DVD numbers up to that point did not include sales of HD-DVD/DVD Combo Format discs. Those numbers have now been added into the data as of the week ending 1/27. Just FYI."

Now isn't this absolutely unfair in that you cannot conclusively prove whether someone was buying it for DVD or for HD-DVD?

Ultimately the figures don't make a bit of difference as BD is still crushing HD-DUD, but damn it... I want it to be even more of a land slide!

I don't think non-HD purchasers of combos affects the results enough to be of any concern.

The mess begins if Total HD is released. The HD DVD crowd will be figuring out ways of claiming every sale for HD DVD.

That's true, and some very big titles will be totalhd: matrix, LOTR, etc.
Probably have to either count them OUT.

Yeah, I'm not really looking forward to the LotR on Total HD. It's just absolutely dreadful on how they will end up having to compromise the quality. :-/

I think so, too.

After all, sales ratio until 3rd week of this year was 2:1.
And so far, percentage of combo seems to be around 10-15%.

Why would they buy the combo disc if they only have a dvd player. They could save money just buying the DVD. So, they probably did buy it for the HD-DVD.

Default Further explanation to HD DVD jump...

Today I got a delivery with 2 Blu-ray movies - Enemy of the State and Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang...or so I thought!
When I opened the package, I noticed that KKBB had a red case.
Appearantly I've been sent the HD DVD instead!

This raises a lot of questions.
Has Amirs long hands reached down to packing & handle-level?
Is this a new strategy from HD DVD - do they send out the red version every once and a while?

Me of course felt guilt, ashame and dirty...and further - does this mean I'm format neutral?
Are there support groups I can join, or a telephone number I can call?

*Curling up like a little ball in the corner of the shower, crying, while trying to scrub myself clean...*

Hope somebody can help.

Best Regards

Oh... those stupid guys.... What have they done to you...??????
Well there are two ways to go.....

1) Look out for an attorney of law who is also a BD Supporter.... He`s got to take that to a court.... or

2) Do nothing... Time will heal..... And we will help you in this thread to forget... Think of all those good news in the last weeks.... If that continues there will be no red discs in some months anymore.....

Just wait for the sales differences in "The Departed", "The Prestige" and "Babel". That will give a better indication of sales over HD dvd.

Can't wait for Casino Royale to dominate!!!

I'll tell you "The Prestige" numbers: 100% BD. It's a Disney title.

I commiserate with you, but I hope you don't mind me getting a good LOL because of the witty way you wrote this. Love the sign off especially.

Blu-ray, HD-DVD Neck-and-Neck

For commulative sales since inception, we now have some numbers:

Quote:
In response to an inquiry from Next-Gen, SCEA states that cumulative Blu-ray movie unit sales stand at just over 439,000 units in the US, while total HD-DVD sales are just under 438,000 units. Blu-ray currently stands as the number one new DVD format in unit and dollar sales in the US, according to research firm NPD Group.
That's why BD caught up so fast. The HD DVD numbers were crap. We were being lied to all along.

The Prestige could hit 100K (both formats) and I expect Casino Royale to surpass that. By the summer, BD will be so far ahead it won't be funny.
