Default Rating PQ in Blu-rays

I gave up on caring "too much" about PQ.... (AQ is still very important) I read so many poor reviews about Reservoir Dogs, (not necessarily from this site) and I watched it on Blu for the 3rd or so time last night, and was just curious, and tossed in one of my 6 Reservoir Dogs DVDs (Mr. Blonde, Mr. Brown, Mr. Orange, Mr Pink, and Mr. White collector's editions, in addition to the "Special Edition" release..... and I gave one copy of it away )

Anyways..... I tossed in the Mr. Blonde edition actually, and I gotta tell you..... you can say this wasn't a good transfer etc., but it's got me thinking about picking up T2, Robocop, etc... that people have steered me away from, because the difference is so noticeable (and I don't care if I have to double dip later, because I would anyways probably) that for the low cost on these (due to the supposed bad transfers) I think the upgrade is worth it!

I always said I'd rely on my own opinion rather than reviews, but because of picking up other things from netflix, DVDs included, I just don't have time to give EVERYTHING the once over..... I got Reservoir Dogs immediately (before reading reviews) and I'm glad I did.... I'd hate to think I may have NOT upgraded this one based on some negative reviews.......

Same thing with Baron Munchausen, I heard mixed reviews, but loved the movie so I got it, and I gotta say.... I'm very happy with the AQ/PQ.

I know everyone will tell me T2 and Robocop were terrible transfers, but I think I might pick up Terminator, T2, and Robocop... because they were all eagerly upgraded in various versions of DVD, and I remember that "marginal" improvement gave me a lot of gratification, so I'm sure the blu-rays will be great.

Robocop is probably the best it's going to look. Go for it.

As for T2, avoid the Lionsgate release and get the UK release from Amazon.uk. Unlike the Lionsgate release, this one has the longer Director's Cut, DTS-HD lossless audio, and better PQ than the other. You can get it from Amazon.uk for around $28 shipped. It's region A/B so it is compatible in your player. I personally own this and I'm happy with it.

I know what you mean, I think I attribute it to the difference in set ups and or what certain eyes see. PQ can be very subjective. I got thrashed for posting how much I loved the look of The Perfect Storm. I think it looks fantastic to me and would have never picked it up if I had gone off the reviews around here. (doesn't help that it's one of the recent titles from WB, everyone's favorite whipping boys these days)

Definitely make up your own mind in terms of PQ and AQ. If you like what was presented the support it. If not, then don't. I love to read what reviewers and critics have to say about products, but it all comes down to experience. You need to experience it first hand to truly know whether or not you will enjoy it. This is all the more true with film and Blu Ray.

I agree wholeheartedly. If I love a movie and there is a BD available, I am going to buy it. I do hope for a double-dip on T2 with some lossless love, though.

Seems like a lot of people downgrade PQ if there is grain present, no matter what the original looks like. The problem is that people will rate PQ on "if it looks like Cars or Ratatouille".

Reservoir Dogs kicks ass ! Back on topic. I felt the same way about First Blood and the rest of the Rambo movies. I was quite happy with the upgrade even though it did not get the coveted 5/5 P/Q and 5/5 A/Q. Even a three or 3.5 is a tremendous upgrade from standard DVD. Just my opinion though. My point is do I have FUN watching the movie or not ? That is the bottom line for me.

+1

While this style of rating is fine for selecting "demo material" to show friends, etc, it is not always true to the original medium or director intent for that matter.

Take Dirty Harry for example. Almost all of the user reviews on this site rate the PQ at about 2. They are all saying that it's a terrible transfer and has excessive grain. I guess they don't realise that's the way the original looks.

But I don't get how it can go anywhere from a 2 to a 4.5 depending on the reviewer. That's the point to OP is making that PQ is just subjective to each viewer and that HiDef doesn't have to look exactly like Cars or Ratatouille

I don't put much stock in the user reviews unless I recognize the poster. I only put weight into the reviewers here and at DVDBeaver, as well as a few others that don't come quickly to mind.

Even though I had been wanting to see it, I avoided the BD of 'The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford' because of the many negative reviews of the PQ. (It was also overpriced IMO.) Then I found a used copy for just $12 the other day and decided to go for it anyway. While there are some issues with the PQ (sometimes too-noticeable EE, sometimes a little too soft) most of it looked pretty darned good to me, even if it was nowhere near reference-BD level. The film is obviously highly stylized to begin with, and there's a fair amount of intentional grain, but it all contributes to the atmosphere and mood that I think the director was trying to convey. It certainly wouldn't have had the same effect if it looked as clean and sharp as, say, 'Transformers'.

Well everything is relative. Some of the movies mentioned don't look that good compared to other Blu-rays, but they definitely look better than any other version of the movie seen since their initial theatrical runs. I use the picture quality tier thread as a rough guide for movies I haven't seen:

I've had the several different Robocop releases and the blu-ray is a marked improvement, sure it's not the best, but with a movie like Robocop I'm not necessarily expecting the best and could care less if there is a frame or two that isn't up to snuff with the rest of the film.

Here you get the unrated version without having to buy the Robocop 3 pack, as most of you remember....the single Robocop DVD release was the rated version.

Jump in, you won't regret it, great movie, 5/5 in my book.

As for DSF comment on T2, thanks for the heads up....been sitting on the side lines for a while with this one

T2 is not horrible.

You most likely will not whip it out to turn heads at an HD-DVD revival convention, but you WILL enjoy the disc and I believe it is stupid cheap everywhere and I think I got it for 12.99 when I bought it.

I almost didn't buy Heroes Season 1 because of the Season 2 review on this site.

I think that "pro" reviewers have to be completely thorough in order to achieve legitimacy with their websites.

Bottom line:

If you watch "the movie" and not "the disc" you will really enjoy a good 95% of the Blu out there.
