Default The Blu-ray Picture Quality Rating Thread

This is the unofficial/official blu-ray picture quality thread. We've borrowed what avs has done and decided it will work very well here. If you'd like to take a look at their list here it is. Highdefdigest has a list of their own that is also similar, seen here. We won't pretend we came up with this idea, but we will try to carry it on with our own opinions. But basically we want this to be a quick guide on which movie looks best. Want to know which movie to rent to show off your brand new plasma? This is where you'd come. This list is strictly for Picture Quality. It could very well be full of stinker movies, they'll just look great doing it. Movie's are listed from Best looking to worst. Naturally we only want the best of the best looking here, so the "worst" is a bit of a lie.

We welcome you to discuss, agree and disagree with everything you see here. Think something should be ranked higher or lower? Tell us what kind of equipment you're using and where and why you think the movie should be placed. This is a group effort and we won't take one person's word on how good a particular movie looks.

If you've got a better way of displaying the movies, or a way of color coding the various specs, let me know. And obviously i left out a lot of great looking blu-ray movies, so let us know if the below list looks right and tell us which movies need added. This is basically a rough draft so it'll be ever changing!

The font too small for everyone?

Here's a break down of what you're looking at. Each movie is linked to blu-ray.com's review. From there you can purchase the video on Amazon.com.

I'd like to see it broken up into tiers...that way each movie doesn't have to be ranked - which would truly be impossible to do. We can have the top tier for the best PQ movies, such as Cars, the Pirates movies, etc etc.

If this works out for PQ, perhaps we could do the same thing for AQ. It'd be really neat if this worked out for both of those. Think it might ward off a lot of senseless threads.

You might also want to link to the PQ Tier thread over at High Def Digest. I generally don't recommend that site but that list is like a cousin of the one at AVS. The rankings aren't identical either.

I vote more... That way it's kind of a one stop glance at some Blu-Rays on the list. Maybe even run times might be a good idea...

I think less is more.

Let's face it - if people want more all they have to do is go to the official review. There they can also read reviews left by members here.

See I thought that too. But I figure, we have space, why not tell them what codec it is and the bitdepth and all that jazz.

Tell them that, but I think breaking each tier into quarters is pointless.

Why do you think that? Not that I am disagreeing or anything, as the whole point of this thread is actually get everyone's input so we can put it to good use.

I support the tier idea.

PQ is subjective enough that some will find Cars looks better than I, Robot and some will find the opposite, but either way, most will agree that both are top tier.

Also, what exactly does 'breaking tiers into quarters' mean or intend to accomplish? If you mean "Tier 1, Level A, B, C, D" isn't that a bit redundant? It practically defeats the purpose of the tier system; if you're going to be as specific as that about it, you might as well go for pure list rather than tier.

guess i should have searched a little better. the mod's seem mostly against a tier thread since its a fairly subjective matter. but i suppose that wouldn't need to stop us from doing it. it doesn't need to be an official thing, but more of a guide to what movies look good.

but if people decide they don't want to bother i won't continue updating the thread, no biggie

I guess this list is only for "demo-grade" stuff, so no grain, "softness" or "weird colors" accepted? IMO it would be great, if a short description of what kind of PQ is wanted for this list could be added to the op, so people don't get confused.

How do you make it so when you click on the name of the movie it links to the review but the URL isn't shown in the actual post?

Is there any chance the font size for the movie name could be made the same size as the standard text on the forum?

Would it be okay if I did a separate tier thread for European titles only - and put that tier thread in the European section of the forum, and made it based on different PQ criteria than this/the other PQ tier thread?

I like the "| video codec | audio codec | aspect ratio | Distributor | Blu-ray release date" below the title.

Simple and informative..
