Default Blu-ray picture quality - Help!

Ok, first off i apologize if this is in the wrong forum but im new here.

When i play Blu-ray movies on my PS3 they look like garbage! I bought Underworld because this site said the picture quality was amazing and rated it at 4.5 out of 5. The picture looks way too fuzzy, grainy, static-y, etc... especially the darker scenes. There has to be somthing wrong because my regular dvd of Underworld looks better then the Blu-ray of it.

Im guessing some of my settings are wrong for my tv or PS3 but im totally stumped. I had noise reduction set to 'high' on my tv and was told that was the problem. Well, i set it to off and still no improvement.

Also, just to add, my hd cable channels look amazing and my PS3 games look amazing too. Only the Blu-ray movies look bad.

Heres my setup:

Sony Bravia 46 inch KDL 1080p
Sony PS3 80 GB
The PS3 is connected with the official Sony hdmi cable.

Thanks in advance for any help. I really want to watch hd movies and Blu-ray but this is killing me right now.

Sounds like either a bad connection/cable, or you have your PS3 set wrong.
Does anything else look crappy like that?
Make sure the PS3 is set to 1080p. Make sure the cable is properly inserted and there is no tension on it.

lemme guess, vivid mode. jk

one calibrate your tv! this will help alot if you havn't done it already. check out the sony calibration thread on this forum for tips.
2 its probably just grain, with increased definition comes the ability to pick out every little flaw and even see the type of film that was used. grain as a problem faded for me after a week or so. i can now watch 300 no problem
underworld 1 looks amazing on my tv, most theatre like quality i have ever seen it.
put it this way your dvd probably looks better at first glance because there is so much noise and lack of definition it blends together like a haze over the image.

My PS3 games look amazingly clear and so my hd cable tv channels. Only my Blu-ray looks like this.

I have my tv set to vivid. Is that a problem or was that just a joke? :P

My output resolution is set to 'automatic.' Does it have to be set to 1080p or is automatic fine?

And what is 'cinema conversion'? Should that be set to automatic or video?

Bitstream or linear? What the hecks the difference?

And what about dynamic range control?

I have no idea what these settings do or what i should set them to...

Vivid is your worst possible option...

i would start f rom square one and work your way up. your bd/dvd settings may be off and some of the settings not all tvs can handle.
bitstreaming is mainly for optical, your using hdmi so keep it to lpcm.
bitstreaming allows the receiver to decode, lpcm, the player decodes.
when setting video, just do the manual and your tv's highest resolution and see if that helps

Agreed!

A gerneral rule without actual calibration is not to adjust any of the settings such as sharpness, or using a mode such as "vivid" that changes the picture. Let your player determine what the picture looks like and let your TV display it, rather than alter it.

Also, des your TV (sorry, I'm just not familiar with it specifically) display the resolution it is displaying at? Most do. There is usually a button on the remote "display" or "info" eor something to that effect that will display some basic info on your screen such as time of day, channel (if your watching TV), Input, and resoultion. This may help you determine what you are seeing.

When I read posts like this, I just want to jump in my car, drive to this person's house, kick the door down like he stole something, and walk over to your display and fix the damn settings myself.

Like everyone has stated it sounds like it just needs to be calibrated but it's hard to tell you what to do without seeing what you're seeing for ourselves. Technically you shouldn't be using the same picture mode that you're using for games that you use for your HD movies. Maybe trying going to the display thread and look for the subthread regarding your specific display and see if anyone has posted their calibration settings.

Vivid looks amazing on my PS3 games yet makes my Blu-ray movies insanely fuzzy and grainy.

I would never think to have different settings for games, movies, tv, etc, as im new to this hd business. :P

I really need to rethink my whole movies settings now... Thanks so far.

You shouldn't even use vivid for games, it just blows the whole picture out

It's really only for sitting on a display room shelf to attract people to the set

i have the kdl-46v3000 sony bravia

i posted my movie watching settings on the calibration page, give them a shot and see if that helps.

i use VIVID for my games because it really doesn't mess up the picture like it does for tv and movies. plus bright games look great.

p.s. i noticed this stuff with my blurays too when i first got my tv, and all i used was vivid at the time, i thought cable/dvd/games looked fine. now that i have my tv calibrated i cannot beleive i ever used to think dvd looked ok on vivid because it really looks awful.

calibrate your custom setting for movies tv etc.....and use whatever u think looks best for your games, i prefer vivid for my games but let me emphasize that this setting distorts your image greatly.

after coming off the vivid setting everything will seem not so bright, give it a little time and you will adjust, and then when you go from a movie on a calibrated setting to a game on vivid it will be blinding.

good luck

Definitely try using the settings the person above me has provided. Also IMO you shouldn't use your blu-ray settings for DVD. I tend to use Movie Mode for my DVD's when I do watch DVD's which is hardly ever.

I have a kdl-40v2500, same line of TVs. My settings are in the link I posted. They won't be exactly your needs, but will get you closer. I also posted some directions on calibrating your TV, follow up my settings with that....
