Default How do you rate the picture quality of a Blu Ray

I'll give you the definitions

Objectivly: Some thing real or observable

Subjectivly: Originating or existing in the mind

I do mine subjectivly I think I mean I gave the trasfer for the Terminator quit a lot more than I gave The Italian Job. Just because I thought that the transfer on the Italian Job should have been much better givin the age of the movie. The Terminator is older, lot of it was shot at night, and James Cameron used only ok film stock due to the lower budget origins of the film.

PS: The Terminator is being perseved digitally in vault for important films.

first thing i look for is 3d-depth where the foreground standing out from mid-ground and motion, no jumps like stutters, clarity, no grain, no dropness of sound

thats what i look for perfect quality
i expect flawless and as for grain its like sand the studios could clean that up
i was more blown away when hdtv first came on the market where i could see every pore of the skin and could see every hair strand

i enjoy blu-ray very much but what i posted is how i rate a video

film grain yuck http://images.google.ca/imgres?imgur...6safe%3Dactive

No grain?

Basically, I don't think PQ is something that can be evaluated objectively. What one person may find beautiful, someone else may find flaws in it. Just like this, I think grain is good, this person thinks grain is bad...

Grain is inherent to film. If it's missing so is fine object detail including facial textures, most of the time. The only time a movie should not have grain is if it was filmed digitally or was an animated feature that was taken directly from the digital source.(Some animated features, like Surfs Up, add grain as part of the visual style of the animation)

I say movie companies should do away with grainy film cameras and go strictly digital

I look for noise, edge enhancement, grain, color reproduction, DNR, skin tones & than factor in the age of the film as well as SD upgrade.

4/10 = Worse than SD
5/10 = 0/5 star = no difference between SD & HD
6/10 = 1/5 star = minor improvement from SD to HD
7/10 = 2/5 star = noticeable improvement from SD to HD
8/10 = 3/5 star = average HD transfer with room for improvment
9/10 = 4/5 star = Above average HD transfer with minimal flaws
10/10 = 5/5 star = Excellent HD transfer
Reference = same as 10/10.

I also compare lossless tracks to lossy as once in a blu moon I have found the lossy to be better. Hostage for example seems to sound better at 448kbps than the dts-HDMA track. I just watched the opening & Surrounds are much more active & dialog isn't drowned out by action scenes. Though this just my early assessment of the sound as I only watched the first 5 minutes.

The video on this, I'd rate a 7 or 8

The proof is in the facial closeups where the detail is amazingly convincing. HD Cable in 1080i cannot hold a candle to Blu-ray.

There are telltale signs of bad transfers, such as macroblocking and blacks that are more like dark greys. For more examples of what makes a BAD transfer, watch XXX (Vin Diesel).

Also some bad choices made by studios.. DNR, edge enhancement, etc..

Grain is fine. It doesn't take away from a transfer at all.

I try to watch all the movies that I've rated twice. Once I'll just sit and watch the movie straight through to get a general subjective feel for the film. On the second go through I pick a handful of scenes were I look specifically for any noticeable artifacls or enhancements that are not inherent to the film. Once I've finished the second run through I then form an opinion on the piece as a whole with those sections as evidence for what I initially observed. If when I go to the second viewing I get a different feel from the first time I go back and watch the movie again to see why it was that I either didn't see something or thought I saw something.

As a side note, I try to take the nature of the film into account when subjectively viewing pq. I know there are things that I don't find visually appealing that the director may have intended for the look of the film, I try not to have that opinion affect what I think of the quality of the transfer, but you can only allow so much leeway. For Instance, Transformers is an excellent transfer, however, the boosted contrast and orange skin tones threw me off so much that I could not ignore it and only would rate it 4.5/5.

In principle it should be objectively but how can one be truly objective ? Only way would be to make some software that somehow measures the quality. Until then, Objectively is just a wish, subjectively is fact.

One thing I have learned, is to never judge a movie's PQ from just 1 viewing. There are a lot of factors that effect your vision/mental state at any given time, and sometimes your just not in a position to be judgeing PQ...especially late at night when you've been watching TV for an extended period or drinking/smoking weed excessively.

That being said...one thing that my eyes always catch right away is overly-digitized grain...can't stand it

You really have no idea what film grain is do you?

Film grain is the texture of the film stock itself. Like the brush strokes of a painting. It's completely natural to see it in a movie shot on film.
