Default DVD-Audio- Will it play on the PS3?

Quote:
now there's something called DVD-Audio. What's the difference? A lot! DVD-A is the latest way to hear multichannel, audiophile-quality albums in your home, using your DVD or DVD-Audio player. A DVD-A can hold up to seven times the data of a normal CD, which results in added features and better sound. Also, with its sampling rate higher than that of average CDs (up to 192 kHz, whereas most CDs get 44.1 kHz), you may hear a lot of details in music on a DVD-A that you'd never discover on an average CD. And, since nearly all DVD-As are engineered for multichannel/surround-sound listening (using five or six speakers), with the right equipment, you'll be able to hear your favorite music in breathtaking surround sound.
Will this work on the PS3?

Thanks

I'm not so sure. I know that they can play on a normal DVD player (I think) but then again, Sony created SACD (its rival) so they could've used a way to block it from their PS3.

DVD-A will not play on the PS3. Some models I have the 80 gig play SACD. I believe only the 80 gig has SACD playback. DVD-A buy a DVD-A audio player.

On most (if not all) DVDAs you will also find the same content in DVDV format, meaning DD or DTS. So you can listen to the material, just not in Hi-Res lossless.

I beg to differ with you.

I own approximately (50) DVD-A titles and they all play just fine in Dolby Digital 5.1 on the PS-3. The only difference is that the sampling rate is 48khz as compared to 96khz on a DVD-A player. The sound quality is still incredible.

I just listened to Ringo Starr " 5.1 The Surround Sound Collection". This is a 2 disc set. (1) is the dts DVD-A and contains a bonus track, and the other is the CD version. After listening to the DVD-A, the CD was not listenable.

DVD-a, no. But music video DVDs, yes. They are regular DVDs that have better quality audio than CDs, using DTS and the like. But just make sure they are DVD videos cause the PS3 can not play DVD-a.

EDIT... I have not tested this, so this is based on what I read about the PS3 on their site.

If someone has tested this and can say different, just make sure they are not the DVD-videos with music like I mentioned (like Porcupine Tree uses).

Correction.....the 60GB PS3 also plays SACD. It's the 40GB that doesn't.

This is true... i missed that in the post. The 40GB is the only one that does not play SACDs. I listen to SACDs on my 60GB (now 160GB ) all the time, and they sound great! It will be sad to see this go away with the new 80GB, but alas, I think that SACD playback is not making any sales for the PS3.
It's Blu-ray, PS3 games, and PS2 games that make the sales. And I am sure they will still add software emulation for PS2 playback by the time the new one is out. SACD will still be out.

I have posted (2) photos. (1) is the cover art of a DVD-A and (1) is the on-screen display of my PS-3 playing this DVD-A.

i don't think anyone is arguing that the disc will play on the ps3, but not in the way they'd play on a dvd audio player. just like a hybrid sacd will play in almost any cd player, doesn't mean you're getting the 5.1 soundtrack

Every DVD-Audio has a DVD-Video "Side", usually with DD and DTS 5.1 tracks

You will not get the hires audio

Well alas, those pics do not prove that this is not a video.
If it is audio, it should not have any video at all, and you should only see the standard PS3 music graphics. I can not tell on that shot what you are looking at.
Can we get a shot of the entire front AND back of the case, as well as the screen while something is playing? I assume since it says Multi-channel it is 5.1, but my Porcupine Tree DVDs have that too, and they are DVD videos with DTS AND PCM stereo 2.0. Seriously. The logo says DVD Audio/Video on mine. (it is the only DVD audio i own actually)

Plus they do play at 48K, 24bit in 5.1. I think it has a separate DVD-A cause it lists it separately on the back but has the same specs as the video.

Every DVDA has some stills that are displayed as the music is playing.

But it says Dolby Digital in that picture...

You have to understand that DVD-As come with a high resolution audio section playable only on DVD-A players and a equivalent (with the same songs) DolbyDigital/DTS/LPMC (can be one or all three) normal DVD audio/video section playable on all DVD players.

Since the PS3 is a DVD player, it will play these stereo/multichannel normal DVD audio DolbyDigital/DTS/LPMC tracks just fine. So yes you can play DVD-A discs on the PS3, you just won't hear the high resolution audio encodes, only the normal DVD audio ones.

Here is the back cover of my CD. I just scanned it. It says clearly audio/video and also has specs for audio, video, and video pcm.

You may be right about the images, i do not have a DVD-a player. But according to the back of my DVD-a/v it has the specs for the audio and video layers. The video layer has PCM, and both audio and video have surround at 48k 24 bit. I can't say which is better, DVD-A 5.1 or DTS 5.1, but they should sound the same of close to it based on the rest.

You do know that DTS is a compresion format right? So no, 48/24 DTS will NOT sound the same as 48/24 PCM.

I know DTS is compressed, but I do not know what DVD-a is. All it says there is "DVD-A 5.1 SURROUND 48k 24 bit" so I don't know. Either way, the PCM is not compressed so you can still hear that on the video side.
