Question Any intrest in a Marvel Universe MMO?

Would anyone like to See a Marvel MMO, like DC Universe?

It was cancelled February 11th 2008 for the 360/PC

Shane Kim's reason why it was cancelled:

Part of the Article :

Quote:
What went wrong?

“I don’t think it’s necessarily a case of what went wrong,” Kim told me. “I don’t know that that’s the right way to put it. For us we look at our priorities and all of the things we have to do. It’s a tough space. It’s a very competitive space. And it’s a space that’s changing quite a bit. …When we first entered into the development and agreement of the development of ‘Marvel Universe Online,’ we thought we would create another subscription-based MMO . And if you really look at the data there’s basically one that’s successful and everything else wouldn’t meet our level or definition of commercial success. And then you have to look [and say]: ‘Can we change the business model for that? Is that really viable given how far we are in development? And so forth. Does Marvel want to do that?’ There’s a whole bunch of factors.”

I asked if he meant that he would have wanted — but was too far in development — to consider other business models for the Marvel MMO such as an ad-supported version. “Item-based or transaction- based,” he chimed in, expanding the possibilities further. “Clearly there are emerging models that have come about. At the end of the day, all of those combined for us to say, look, it’s probably in the interest of both parties for us not to continue.”

Kim made it clear the Marvel project is done.

A reaction by Developer David Perry(Shiny Entertainment):
Quote:
"World of Warcraft sells because Blizzard made it, and Blizzard is a fantastic company, right? The talent at Blizzard is just phenomenal. If you can get a team that's got the same quality and you have that licence, I'll take the Marvel licence every time over Warcraft,"
David Perry/eurogamer article

it would be fun to see this game announced on the PS3 at Leipzig, but yeah I doubt it

I'm a life-long fan of Marvel, and thus am much more familiar with it's universe. I would have much preferred a Marvel MMO.

I love so many Marvel characters and very few DC ones ... Te MMORPG I liked the best was City of heroes, but with the real Marvel heroes it'd be sweet - no idea though how it would be handled as everyone would choose to be Wolverine or Iron Man, and the experience system would be strange

I think it would be like The DC one though, where you would make your own hero/villain and then meet villains and heroes in the Marvel universe

Thats why I think when they make these MMO type games, they should put a single player non online part so you can pick any hero or villian and try to destroy/save the cities/world/universe of Marvel/DC

I read Marvel comics, not DC, which is why I was really looking forward to the Marvel project. It was the one game that the 360 had that I really wanted, but it was coming on the PC, so it wasnt a big deal

I would have loved to see both a Marvel and DC MMO. I would have pulled more for a Marvel one and I am a little disappointed that it was canceled. I wanted to see how both projects were to play out.

I will most likely try the DC MMO if when it nears release it still sounds interesting. I too am more of a Marvel fan and would have loved roaming the streets of the Marvel Universe.

You really need to have something special to have a very successful MMO. You don't have to be #1 to make money but you still need to have a minimum to make money.

In that type of market people usually have time to only play 1 MMO, 2 at best. Hence you need something pretty spectacular to make people buy your MMO and pay the fee each month.

It also doesn't mean, because you have a cool license that it will be handled well either. Look at SW: Galaxies...what a mess.

I much prefer the DC Universe, so I'm stoked about DCU Online. Of course I can't wait to play MK vs DC as well, though I'm equally looking forward to MUA2:Fusion.

Count me in as another who would have preferred to be getting a Marvel MMO.

I was extremely disappointed when MS pulled the plug on this. If the DC MMO does well enough though, I could see MS quietly putting this back into production for the neXtBOX

Question About MMO Fees

What if the game was Free?....and you only pay for extra stuff, like extra missions or characters?

Do you think maybe Home's virtual ad spaces will help pay for these fees?

maybe we won't need ingame ads!

I was interested in this, only CoH/V was too similar and already out and i have that. Woulda been nice to be able to use the charactors from the marvel universe if that was the plan, even if i would get bored after a while.

The engine that was going to be used for Marvel Online, is now being used to power their new MMO titled Champions Online.
