Default What's YOUR Reason for Buying Blu-rays?

I am very curious about this, as some of you who own quantities above 100 or so just don't rub me right (not in a bad way, but just in general). First of all, how do you have the time in your lives to watch ALL of the films? Second, you can't say that you bought the 220 BDs in your collection because you actually 'enjoyed the film.'

So, just wondering what the reasoning is behind the purchases.

how many blu-rays are on the market? I doubt it's above 3 figures

I have about 120 at the moment, check my sig - with the exception of the punisher & paprika, I have enjoyed them all and would watch them again.

good luck with this one man..... gonna get HOT in here!!!!

I don't have that many blu-rays, just ones I like, but have a lot of DVDs (above 3 figures as you say) and I can say from that experience that I have many many many great movies, and enjoy them all for one reason or another.....

few things..

I watch a lot of movies, and very little television

I let people borrow them, or people like to watch them when they're at my house

I got into the "collecting" thing too, so 250-300 of my DVDs are Criterion collection, of which most are classics/foreign etc....

I have an appreciation for film... it's different than "I like Sci-Fi" or "I like Westerns" (both true however) by which I mean I find the "art" in the making/direction etc....

It's convenience, as I don't have to rent many movies, although I have netflix now, so I can determine what new movies I want to buy without paying too much for renting them (it was expensive in the DVD days, of paying $4 or so to rent a movie, then $20 more to buy it a few days later)

what else would you like to know ?

Looked over this, but I believe I read somewhere on this board that there are about 1,200 titles available in BD (at least in the US).

But, what I meant was owning 100+ titles on BD...I worded it incorrectly.

Since the sticking point for some is that none of the 4 options 'fits', I'll try to give some background on each:

The first option is for those that own titles to WATCH them and enjoy them. I don't think this includes those that do like the films they own, but don't have the intention/desire/ability to watch the titles they own over and over again (I feel that falls into the collectors option...just like any collector, they may enjoy what they are collecting, but {for example} a toy collector isn't going to play with his toys even though he may like to collect them).

The second option covers those that buy a movie for the 'ownership value' more than an actual 'viewing value'. To put this in short terms, this person is happy to have the film on their shelf, even if they don't watch the movie all too often. Do you enjoy the movies you own? Most likely. Do you watch all of the movies you own at least once a year? Most likely not. I'd also say another cut-off for this option is those who own 150+ BDs, but more specifically those that average over 5 or 6 BD purcahses/month. I assume most people average between 1-3 BDs per month (I am just under 2 myself). So anything over that, plus some, would indicate an ulterior motive outside of planning to watch and enjoy a film (the reason most people buy a movie).

The third option is for those who are more likely to double-dip their ENTIRE DVD collection (not just a few good titles here and there), and who focus on the superior quality of the BD over SD/DVD. They also tend to not buy a BD movie they like because 'the PQ is not rated high enough', as opposed to just buying it because you like the movie. They tend to focus more on a collection of the HD films than of the films they like and enjoy. They may also overlap into either one of the above categories, but will more likely be 'middle of the road' in the number of owned titles (as they'll refuse to purchase those movies with less-than-excellent PQ and AQ).

The fourth option will be rare on this board, as this is the 'a-typical' uninformed consumer. They will just go to a store, disregard anything that is priced normally and only consider purchasing sale items or something that REALLY peaks their interest at the time (maybe knowing little about the actual film, itself, bu saying, "Oooo, George Clooney is in this one...I LOVE his acting!" and purchasing based on that). Again, overlap is going to happen, but this person will tend to have a lot of the, ahem, 'lesser desired' films in their collections (See: HD Scapes) just because it was on sale for $6.00 on Amazon.

Hope this helped!

I will say that alot of my bd watching is determined by mood, am I in the mood to watch this movie? I have some that I purchased months ago but have not watched. I know they are good and that I will enjoy watching them but I have not been in the mood for that particular film yet. I do enjoy the picture quality but perfect is not mandatory, I have purchased some that are not great pq. They are still better than the dvd equivalent regardless.

I also have been very busy this summer and have only had a couple of weekends when I could watch more than one disc. Weeknights I have a few tv shows that I follow so I don't watch alot of BD during the week. Not enough time per day/week to do everything so the bd watching usually comes in last.

I watch a few movies a week depending on who the Red Sox are playing, giving me plenty of time to watch my 165+ Blu's. While not all of my movies are excellent films, different moods require different viewing experiences. Sometimes I want to watch a great movie, 2001, or a comedy, Kung Fu Hustle, or an action movie, Die Hard, or a crime drama, Infernal Affairs, etc.

I usually only buy my favorites, I think it's pointless to buy blu-rays that I will never watch again. That's what renting is for... And my local blockbuster rents blu-rays, so I'm in good shape.

Where's the "So I can feel cool in my own mind option?". Honestly, of my 70-80 or so, I've bought almost every single one because I enjoyed the movie. There are 2 blind buys that I took on recomendations from this website.

of your poll options..... none of the above fits with my situation.....

Currently I don't have too many, but I buy Blu-rays for the same reason as DVDs, and if I reach the number of Blus as DVDs, it'll be physically impossible for me to watch each at least once a year...... but with that being said, option #1 is the closest I can come to an answer for you

none really fit with my description either.

1. Do I only buy movies I like? Yes.

2. Have I watched all my movies? No. Ive only watched about 90% of them, i have had Flags of our Fathers for over a year now and havn't watched it. A few other freebies I havn't had intrest in either like Stir of Echos, Pearl Harbor, 20 million Miles to Earth.

3. Do I Enjoy Collecting Blus? Yes

4. Have I ever bought a blu just to collect it? No

5. Do I watch my movies at least once a year? No, but Ive watched each of the HPs about 3x, Across the Universe 5x, Cloverfield 2x, TAOJJBTCRF (try to figure out what that is) 3x, 2001 6x, etc. So, some I get a lot more use out of than others. And if I had a nickle for everytime somebody came over to my house and wanted to watch "300 on blu-ray" Id be rich. A lot of people don't have HDTVs in college and if they do its usually a vizio and if they do have one they usually don't have BD.

Well, that's my point. Why buy a movie if you don't watch it over the course of owning it over a few years? Why not just sign up for Blockbuster and rent it?

I just see some people on here say they have 100+ BDs (just a year into the technology), and the higher that number goes, the more I'm like, "How? Why??"

I know this convo will hit a dead end at some point, but I just want to know why.

Personally, I own 10 BDs, all of which are movies that I thoroughly enjoy, and will watch at least two to three times/year. All (except two I got in the mail yesterday) have been watched at least once already (some twice).

I just find it....off...for someone to own so many BDs (many of which they probably haven't even watched, unless you're watching 1-2 BDs/day), that they can't possibly enjoy them all on a basis regular enough to justify the $20-30 cost.

IMO, its more about VALUE than ownership. If I can't ENJOY a movie enough to justify spending money on it, I won't. Do I enjoy movies I don't own? Yes. Do I enjoy them enough to purchase them with the impression that they'll get a few viewing per year? No. But, I am a Blockbuster member. If there's a movie I like and want to watch, I'll add it to the list and pay less than 1.00 to view that movie.

You admit you like collecting Blu's, and you say you own a number of Blu's that you haven't watched, some for more than a year. So how can you say that you bought them because you 'truly' enjoy them enough to watch them over and over again when they've sat on your shelf collecting dust for a year +?

IMO, I would classify you as a collector. Its not a bad thing, and that's fine. You may enjoy all of the movies you own on some level, but to buy a BD and not watch it once you buy it is a 'collector's move' in my eyes.

A polite question on the topic is refreshing. These normally start out with people bashing.

I buy movies that:
1. I'd probably want to see three or more times over the lifetime of the media.
2. I wanted to see in the theater but missed.
3. I enjoyed so much that I think friends would enjoy. It's a nice way of sharing.
4. I think are worthy of collecting.

I'm a good source for friends and family to borrow from. My library isn't the biggest but it contains a good number of those that many can enjoy including sleepers that many have missed.

Im curios what is that?
anyway.....every movie that i have i got because i really like the movie, i do have some blind buys based on the review from this website. but that's only a few, all the rest i got because i wanted them. do i like to collect blu's? yes but that comes second, the only movies i collect is the ones i like maby that's why i don't have alot (45) i only buy the good ones ( this is not to say people with over 300 BD's have a bad collection its means that the movies i like you may not, and thers only a select few movies that i like.....have a nice day)

I certainly don't have any problem with the people that buy 2-3 movies each week...in fact, I encourage it so that Blu will keep expanding. But I'm in the minority here (owning about a dozen Blu) in that I only buy movies that I would pay to rent a couple of times....figure if I'd rent it at least 2 -3 times, might as well buy it.

My buying habits basically limit me to movies that I know have replay value that I'd watch over and over......for instance, Christmas movies during the holidays. Speaking of which......anyone heard anything about a remastered Christmas Vacation? or Home Alone/It's a Wonderful Life?
