Default Advice on a Surge Protector or UPS

Hi All,

I recently added a second Emotiva amp to my set up. My audio rack is right next to an outlet which used to have my Onkyo 805 and the first Emotiva amp plugged in there. The rest of my components are plugged into a regular surge protector plugged into another outlet on the other side of my display.

The Onkyo's power cord will not reach the other outlet and the amps cannot be plugged into a surge protector. So the Onkyo will now have to go into the surge protector. I have already been wanting to upgrade my surge protector for a while and now since the Onkyo will be plugged into I thought now would be a good time. Here are the one I am looking at...

http://www.amazon.com/Monster-HTS-2600-MKII-PowerCenter/dp/B00006341G/ref=sr_1_46?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1217089437&sr=8-46

http://www.amazon.com/Monster-Reference-MKII-PowerCenter-Circuitry/dp/B000AYDQB6/ref=pd_bbs_sr_8?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1217089675&sr=8-8

http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

I have never bought anything of Monsters before, all my cables have been Monoprice or Blue Jeans, but these two items seem to be used alot so I put them on the list. I am really wondering about the Monoprice UPS, I love there cables and wonder if this would be as good or if I am better off sticking with another brand. Any advice or suggestions would be great. Thanks for the again for the help and sorry for being so wordy..

The Monster equipment listed aren't UPS systems. They're just extremely expensive surge protectors. If you're using one of those Monster products, when there is a spike or anything, it'll probably turn off your equipment right then and there. The UPS will protect your equipment while keeping your equipment running in even the worst weather.

Honesly...if you are running seperate amps...FURMAN is your goto source for the ultimate protection.

I use a Furman powerfactor pro-R for my guitar setup and it keeps everything smooth and safe. They have excellent products for home theater.

Happy hunting and enjoy your search,

You'll find that there are 2 companies consistently mentioned on this site/forum(s) that members quite forecefully (at times) tell you to stay away from. And those companies are MONSTER and BOSE. The reason is quite simple actually and I think it's because the price/performance ratios of their products are completely unwarrented. But I guess someone has to pay for all that fancy packaging and advertising!

Although I can't comment on the Monoprice unit you linked in your post. I do like the fact they have more inputs than either of the Monster units. Maybe that's a consideration for you.

Personally I beleive a lot of this power conditioning stuff is hogwash and the only thing you really need is a solid surge protector. I bought the PURE | AV Home Theatre Surge Protector from BELKIN (see link below). I paid$49.99 at Costco and it has served me well. It may not look as nice as any of the units you are considering, but I think mine does just as good a job as those.

Save your money and buy some BD movies or PS3 games with the difference.

I second this recommendation for Furman. I have their Elite-15 PFI, and it's great.

I don't really understand why some folks push UPS systems for HT. I can see maybe investing in a UPS if you have a projector or other 'bulb' display that you would want to properly power down versus cutting-off power (and maybe a HTPC, also), but a basic/good surge protector is all you really need for other displays and AV equipment. Am I missing something here? If I am, someone please set me straight. Not trying to knock others' choices. I just hate seeing someone fork over several hundred bucks when it's not needed.

You're correct when it comes to UPSs, but more expensive power conditioners tend to be better than the cheaper ones. And don't forget that power conditioners (which tend to be on the pricer side) are more than just surge protectors.

DLP's have fans in them to cool the bulb after you turn the TV off, that's why alot of people run UPS systems. I would trust my equipment to a belkin. I'm using Panamx and it is great. Living in cebtral Fl. you need good protection due to our lightning strikes.
