Default Circuit City/BB Calibration

I picked up a Panasonic 42 Viera Plasma a couple of weeks ago and decided not to have them calibrate it. Picture looks a little grainy, not sure if its just because of Time Warner cable or whether I should have it calibrated. I got the HD Basics blu ray but I tried it and its confusing as S***. What should I do?

grain doesn't usually have much to do with calibration unless your brightness is turned up all the way. It's probably your signal. Cable signals are compressed to crap. How do the blus look?

Pick up a calibration disk and do it yourself. Save yourself some money

False, Sharpness should be relabeled as Grain Enhancer.

I hate when those are called "calibration" discs. All those discs do are adjustments.

Do not judge the overall picture quality by cable or sat. content. Most dont have a standard worked out yet and each channel can differ dramatically with HD programs. Best way to judge would be using a BD. Grain basically comes from the sharpness on the set but if your contrast and brightness are off that can also contribute to it. If you sit down and follow the instructions on the hd basics disk its not that bad. Find the pattern relating to brightness {black level} and then contrast {white level}. Then use the color bars with the blue filter and adjust your sets color control till each bar is even looking thru the filter. Use the same pattern and adjust your tint control the same way. Lastly find the overscan image and adjust your sharpness. Usually that control is set more towards the left hand side of the adjustment than the others. Hope that helps. Good luck.

sorry, but sharpness and grain are not even close to the same things. He is likely talking about video noise, which is ususally confused with a film "grain" look and comes from a crappy video signal. Calibration has more to do with correct color, contrast and brightness of the picture.

They are kinda confusing to people that aren't very familiar with HT stuff. I found myself scratching my head quite a bit with the DVE BD.

You have no idea what you are talking about. Turn your sharpness up and see if it effects the apperance of grain, if not you are kidding yourself.

In my local area CC and BB, they charge differently. CC charges $150 and BB charges $300. Hmmmmm I wonder which one I would pick.

If he wants ISF though - he probably shouldn't go with Circuit Shitty. I've heard bad things about their 'calibration.' Not as many bad things about Worst Buy's....but yeah. Apparently the Moron Squad only has a 1 day class about calibration.

LOL turn any pic setting dramatically the wrong way and you'll see grain. Try adjusting the sharpness instead of your bunny ears LOL! Clearly I'm lost in the tv world. I'm so sick of noobs pretending to be tv repairmen online

His point was that typically when someone receives a set from the store the sharpness is set way too high and needs to be adjusted, not to mention all the other settings that are undoubtedly out of whack from the stores vivid mode.

+1..........If your "Grey scale" is not calibrated properly first, all you are doing is adjustments.

Noob, LOL. I guess almost a year on the forum still makes me a noob.

Doesn't your statement go against your original post then?

Exactly, and sharpness is the setting that effects it the most.

Sharpness, Contrast, any "enhancement" settings on the tv can cause a perceived increase in grain, noise... what have you.

Save the tough guy act for the UFC PPV's or something. It was a legitimate statement.

I'm confused...you are agreeing with me and then telling me I'm acting?
