His point was that typically when someone receives a set from the store the sharpness is set way too high and needs to be adjusted, not to mention all the other settings that are undoubtedly out of whack from the stores vivid mode.

Exactly, and sharpness is the setting that effects it the most.

True...but for it to be very noticible as the op is describing it would have to be way out of wack. I'm still waiting on the answer of how a blu looks.

Actually, out of the box on vivid mode IS way out of whack!!

ok I'm done going back n forth. I have a similar tv to the op and changing the video settings on a high quality plasma doesn't produce any grain. Vivid included. The grain is likely coming from over compression from your cable company.
