His point was that typically when someone receives a set from the store the sharpness is set way too high and needs to be adjusted, not to mention all the other settings that are undoubtedly out of whack from the stores vivid mode.

Exactly, and sharpness is the setting that effects it the most.

ok I'm done going back n forth. I have a similar tv to the op and changing the video settings on a high quality plasma doesn't produce any grain. Vivid included. The grain is likely coming from over compression from your cable company.
