Default DTS-HD vs DD5.1 question (mini-stereo system)

I have a Panasonic mini-stereo system right now that I am using with my TV for watching BDs with my PS3. I am assuming that this stereo doesnt have have any support for DTS-HD and all that jazz (sorry, not very knowledgeable on audio) since it is atleast 6 years old and prolly didnt cost more that $300-400.
However, I have noticed a great improvement in audio quality & volume when I switch audio tracks from DD5.1 to DTS-HD.
Is this possible??
The stereo does have 5 speakers (centre, 2 surrounds & 2 bookshelf/towers) and has some sort of a pro-logic setting that I assume activates the surround sound.
Maybe when I get home Ill look more into the model number and such, but any insight would be helpful
Thanks
