Default Popping sub question

I have an older 10" Cerwin vega powered sub with its own volume and crossover. Its connected to an H/K 110 avr. I find that I'm always adjusing the volume on this for different movies the worst being any Star Wars movies which make the bass pop badly until its turned down to almost nothing. Is this normal? I have the crossover set to 80Hz and all other speaker set to small as per info I've read on this site.
Otherwise after adjustment and for most other movies it sounds good.

Can someone explain this to me?

That isn't normal. I think the sub is being clipped. Sounds like an upgrade is in order!

What seems to be the problem is your sub. I think the receiver is doing its job right, but your sub isn't able to keep up with it.

What specs should I be looking for on a sub so I know it can work with the amp???

Also why is it that the clipping happens with some movies and not all????

The extension of the sub can only go so far before bottoming out or clipping from certain frequencies, scenes, or fast action sequences. The only thing you should worry about to make sure that it works with the amp is that it is powered. I'll be posting my review of the Elemental Designs A2-300 in a week and a half or so. (About when it's supposed to come) That's the sub I'd recommend for you, unless your budget limits or allows for something different that is.

By power do u mean that if the amp is rated for 100W for example then the amp should be rated at no more than 100W???

As for budget, I wouldn't want to spend any more than $300 for at least a 10" sub. Any suggestions???

I plan on upgrading my amp to the HK 254 as soon as they fix all their sync issues with PS3

No, for power, I mean that it doesn't rely on the amplifier to get it's power. (It was a joke.) Most subs are powered and are connected via an RCA (or subwoofer) cable. The eD would be your best choice for $315. There is no shipping or taxes added to the price anyways.

Now which kind of eD are you talking about? ...

Just kidding! eD stands for Elemental Desgins. I mentioned that a few posts ago. The sub, that is.

First you might want to adjust the subwoofer level on your receiver along with the gain on the subwoofer itself. Neither should be set to max. You might be pushing the sub too hard and that would go for any sub you get. A bigger more powerful sub might be what you require.

If you want "big bass" then look for "big subwoofers" with lots of power to spare.

I think most people overdo it when it comes to subs. Deep is great but to much power makes for an unbalanced system. So don't crank up all the settings. Not eveything is suposed to have MONSTER BASS.

If I were to set my sub volume to max it would probably explode
So I can only set it to 1/4 and the amp is at -5dB and these settings I sometimes have to change for diff movies for example DTS and DD 5.1 seem to have diff strength bass signals. I usually have to turn up DTS and I find DTS overall sounds better than DD 5.1 when given the choice.

I love my new SVS PB12-NSD.

Deep with power to spare, and surprisingly musical. You definitely need a new sub, though. Nobody here will recommend a really crappy one, but if you look at some other models, don't be deceived by what the manufacturer claims as "Dynamic" power or Max power--my old sub was 230W "dynamic", meaning that that's the most it could output. At the max playback level, distortion is always very very bad. My new sub is 325W RMS, which is the only number pertaining to power that really matters. So a 230W dynamic sub may only be 50W RMS. Very puny--the bad kind of eD, if you will.

It must be going bad or something. Maybe one of the caps in the amp is crapping out.

I would look for a new 12" or 15" model if you want deeper bass.

How do you have your sub connected (LFE)??? If you have it set at 1/4 volume something isn't right. Could be settings, connection or sub itself.

It can't be the amp because the sub works well with most signals. It's only specific movies like Star Wars series that it starts to pop. I have it connected to the amp with a single cable that I then split into a Y connection at the sub because the sub has left and right inputs.

I don't need deeper bass. I find it deep enough.

He needs that eD sub (the A2-300.) It goes down to 18hz for $315.
