Default HBO Announces 'The Sopranos' for HD-DVD and Blu-ray

Link

Quote:
HBO Home Video has announced 'The Sopranos: Season 6, Part 1' will be released on HD-DVD and Blu-ray Disc on December 19. Astute readers might remember HBO originally planned to release the season on November 7 for HD-DVD only, so it would appear the delay was necessary to prep the set for a multi-format release.

Both versions will carry a steep SRP of $129.95 and include four audio commentaries with cast and crew including David Chase (“Kaisha”), Edie Falco, Jamie-Lynn Sigler and Robert Iler (“Join the Club”), Michael Imperioli, Tony Sirico and writer Terence Winter (“The Ride”) and writer Matthew Weiner (“Luxury Lounge”). Spanning four discs, the $129.95 puts the cost-per-disc at over $30. Of course, actual retail pricing should be significantly less, but still plan on opening up the wallet to take either version home.

The DVD pricing has always been high on it since it makes only so much of its money as an HBO exclusive. They haven't made all their money back on it from commercials and the like, so the retail market has to bear some of that.

I *want* this set. But I haven't made it past season 2 on DVD yet so this does me little good. I'll wait till there's a price drop on it in a year or two and as I get caught up. this is good to see coming out but I can stand to wait.

I've made it through the first four seasons, but then my girlfriend hasn't seen any, so I'm currently getting her caught up too.
We're on Season 3 Episode 1.
The DVD sets were always expensive for Sopranos too, CDN$100 is not unheard of.

I'm going to buy the whole series in HD and it'll cost me a mint.

Then I'll have to be Sex and the City for my gf because she's hooked.

Then I'll have to buy Rome and more. HBO is going to own my azz.

Most of the time, I only buy TV comedies on DVD, and with those prices, this trend will continue for me with BD. Hopefully Netflix will have them.

This was released yesterday. BB has it for $119.99.

What is interesting however, the BD version has LPCM audio, where as the HD-DVD version has DD+ audio.

Has Warner been listening? Is this a sign of things to come?

Discuss.

Wow! So whenever someone posts, "Blu-ray has only equaled HD DVD, never exceeded it." we can point to this as proof it is superior. Nice!

I'm surprised Warner/HBO didn't use TrueHD on the HD DVD. I wonder if HD DVD can't do full-frame with lossless at this point?

LPCM on BD, wow I sure hope that is a sign of Warner's catch-up committment.

This is perhaps the best news we have seen for BD for some time.

I can finally start buying Warner releases They had better do this with Batman Begins, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, etc..!

24 is my favourite television show of all time.
I have not bought Season 5 on DVD yet. It's the first season I haven't bought on release day.
I'm hoping that perhaps when ABC releases Lost Season 1 that Fox may be interested in putting Season 5 of 24 out on Blu-ray with lossless DTS-MA.
That would be sweet.
