Default Blu-ray player ... which one?

I had bought the Sammy BDP1000 then sold it because my mom is offering to buy the Sony... now, should I go with the Sony? Or, maybe wait for the new Samsung (BDP1200) ? Any thoughts or input would be appreciated...

Why is the PS3 out of the question?

I have considered PS3, but I'm not much of a gamer. I have heard the PS3 is one of the best (if not, the best) Blu-ray player out right now.

Then IMO, I would buy the PS3 for Blu-ray playback along with storage capabilities that allow it to be a media player, the ability to download HD trailers, and web surfing. Who knows, you might want to pick up one game along the way. The PS3 is a no brainer right now. A steal for the price.

Read the March 07 issue of Home Theater Magazine. Their glowing 94/100 review should knock you off the fence.

And this is a magzine that has serious perception issues out there for being biased towards HD-DVD no less.

Frankly, you don't need to be a gamer at all to buy this thing and have an incredible value for your dollar.

I say go for the PS3 as your first Blu-Ray player.
You DON'T have to be a gamer to appreciate one of the best Blu-Ray players on the market today. If you just want to watch Blu-Ray movies, the $500 20GB version of PS3 will do VERY nicely. And they're not kidding about the PS3 being that good a Blu-Ray player -- an absolute steal!!
I plan to get my 20GB PS3 pretty soon....EXCLUSIVELY as my first Blu-Ray player.
Stay tuned.......

I also went with the PS3 and am very happy with it. If you get one, also pick up the remote control for it. Using the game controller as the remote gets to be annoying if your main use is movie viewing as it is for me.

The funny thing is, is that I now know which keys to hit on the game controller to navigate the menus, fast forward, stop and play. Only reason I would get the remote is for the wife.

I remember back in the early days of the PS2 it was the same way. I'm perfectly used to it and find that I don't need the remote.

Aren't universal remotes like Harmony and others capable of handling PS3 remote commands?

I totally agree with this statement about Home Theater Magazine. In fact they never do Blu-ray movie reviews (at least I have not seen any). Towards the back of the mag they do HD DVD and SD movie reviews but no Blu-ray. The magazine has no problem taking advertising money from Blu-ray equipment manufacturers. Hopefully the tide is changing for Home Theater Magazine too. I would hate to give up HTM but I will if they don’t change their ways

Same here. After such a blowout, glowing PS3 review and with plenty of BD hardware choices out there in general? What you just spelled out needs to change in very short order or I will most certainly be cancelling my subscription.

I was having no problems at all, until i'd leave it on the couch or it would fall or i'd bump it and those R/L shoulder buttons would startr fastforwarding and rewinding. I did that about 3x before I blew my top and headed out for the remote. Haven't had an issue since. It's a much more pleasureable experience using the remote vs. the six axxis controller.

Nope, PS3 uses bluetooth, I don't think it has an IR sensor to be able to read signals from most universal remotes (I don't think the PS3 will be able to interact with RF universal remotes either). I tried setting my Harmony 880 for the PS3 and it said that the PS3 requires a bluetooth remote.

Yes it is but if you want a descent player go ahead with Sony BDP-S1 check my post reply in opinions needed in blu-ray players section.

"The BD-P1200 builds on the success of the first generation Blu-ray player by introducing a new IP processor (HQV), adding Dolby Digital plus, and adding an ethernet connection. The HQV (Hollywood Quality Video) chipset delivers pixel based, motion adaptive processing that sets a new standard in video quality. The BD-P1200 also introduces Ethernet capability to take full advantage of future upgrades."

At $799, this will be my choice for a new Blu-ray Disc player when it comes out in late March/early April of this year.
