The funny thing is, is that I now know which keys to hit on the game controller to navigate the menus, fast forward, stop and play. Only reason I would get the remote is for the wife.

I remember back in the early days of the PS2 it was the same way. I'm perfectly used to it and find that I don't need the remote.

Aren't universal remotes like Harmony and others capable of handling PS3 remote commands?

Nope, PS3 uses bluetooth, I don't think it has an IR sensor to be able to read signals from most universal remotes (I don't think the PS3 will be able to interact with RF universal remotes either). I tried setting my Harmony 880 for the PS3 and it said that the PS3 requires a bluetooth remote.

I have a Harmony also and have seen some work arounds posted, but the remote made more sense to me. Not spendy and works great.

I was having no problems at all, until i'd leave it on the couch or it would fall or i'd bump it and those R/L shoulder buttons would startr fastforwarding and rewinding. I did that about 3x before I blew my top and headed out for the remote. Haven't had an issue since. It's a much more pleasureable experience using the remote vs. the six axxis controller.
