OK, I did a search, sorry if this has been addressed before, but…I have the Onkyo TX-SR605. Sometimes when listening to 5.1 sound (either via cable TV or DVD) some of the sound seems to be coming from the side speakers (the “7” in 7.1), not just the rear.
I thought with a 5 channel mix, the side “extra” speakers would just not produce any sound. I tried to switch them off via the speaker setup, but I can’t kill the side speakers without killing the rears as well. Anyone else run into this, or have any suggestions? |

If you wired everything correctly then you side speakers are your "Surrounds".
They will be playing on 5.1 tracks (with perhaps a little output for the backs) They are not the "Extra" surrounds.... The Back Surrounds are the Ones that would not be used if you were NOT using a 7.1 Surrounds. Last edited by MPDIEHL; 08-09-2008 at 11:15 PM. |

I think you got a little mix up there.
The side speakers are #4 & #5. The rear speakers are #6 & #7. So you should be hearing sound in your side speakers and not the rear speakers in 5.1. -Mat |

Do you have rear speakers set up? If you do, the 5.1 will include the side speakers. 7.1 will supply sound to the rear speakers as well. I'm not familiar with your set up, but I was under the impression that you will get sound from the side speakers in any set-up.

OK, now I am confused. When I bring up the on-screen display for making the adjustments to the speakers, It shows the front speakers in the front, the speakers on the side (of the “seated person”) are labeled surround, the rears are labeled surround back. In a 5.1 configuration, the “rears” would be the “surround” speakers, right? If so, why are they not the ones playing when the sound mix on the DVD is only 5.1?

The speakers you placed to the sides (the same ones wired to the "surround" posts on the back of the amp) are your surrounds.
They are your surrounds if you are playing a 5.1 or 7.1 souindtrack If you play a 7.1 sound track then there is additional information sent to your Back surrounds. Quote:In a 5.1 configuration, the “rears” would be the “surround” speakers, right? This statement is incorrect.... In a 5.1 mix the surround sound is sent to the surround channels NOT the Back Surround. Your Surround speakers are placed to the sides and that is where the sound will come from. OK, now I dig it. Guess I should read the instructions more carefully. I was under the impression the surround speakers should always be behind the listener. Thanks for the help guys.
