Default Blu-Ray vs. HDTV

i have a 32" LG HDTV and i am going to be buying a Blu-Ray player....i have HD service, how is the HD Cable vs. Blu-ray because the HD Cable looks a lot better than my up-scaling DVD player...so i was wondering if the picture looks the same or better than the HD Cable...on a 720P tv.

thanks guys!

A lot of programming on digital cable is shot, or at least only presented, in 1080i, not 1080p. Although I saw a commercial earlier that Dish Network offers 1080p Blu-Ray quality, but I believe that may just be on their HD movie channels.

The blu-ray will look as good as it can on a 720p television.... but audio is what you should be thinkin about. If you have a 5.1 system, then you'll benefit from the blu-ray audio (uncompressed like DTS HD-MA, Dolby TrueHD, and PCM). THe difference is considerable.

That's not for regular broadcast. The 1080p is only for Video On Demand and Pay Per View.

Some films will look better than HD broadcast material of live sports but some won't. Film has its own look that is a little different than something shot on HD video. Virtually all Blu-rays will show less compression artifacts than HD broadcast material though.

I have a 32" LCD 720p. I tend to notice that a lot of Blu Ray films look better than HD broadcasts. There's less compression artificats on Blu Ray. And even with a 720p tv, Blu Ray looks MUCH better than any upscaled dvd.

+1 on the compression artifacts part. I find that watching TV shows on blu-ray makes a world of difference. Just check out LOST to see how blu-ray blows the socks off of hdtv programming. But even shows like Smallville show improvement strictly on the lack of artifacts.

Yeah, the compression is always going to be there. Plus the sound sucks. I also find the interlacing too distracting in most cases.
Blu-ray is FAR FAR superior to cable and satellite HD. However on your smaller sized screen, you might not get the full effect of the quality without sitting much closer to it.

Yeah, basically:

Blu-Ray > OTA HD > Cable/Sat

Close. Uncompressed is PCM, lossless is DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD. But you're absolutely right. The sound makes a huge HUGE difference.
