There's a very good 2.0 profile player for $399 called PS3.
If spending a lot of a player makes you feel better about it's performance then there is a nicely pricey Denon here for $999 https://www.blu-ray.com/players/players.php?id=30 It's not profile 2.0 though like your ps3. ![]() At least you can brag about how much you spent on it though and it's pretty too. ![]() -Brian Last edited by bhampton; 08-12-2008 at 05:29 PM. |

From what I hear the PS3 is your best bet under $500.
Also, I sense you don't like Monster Cable but I bought this a short while ago and am very pleased with it. I can actually send my coaxial cable through it without distorting or weakening the signal. http://www.monstercable.com/productdisplay.asp?pin=1900 |

quote "i heard these days stand alones are slightly better"
You heard that from someone who is trying to justify their own stand alone player. Honestly,.. I wonder where the slightly better comes in. I may eventually replace my own PS3 with a stand alone player just for the simpleness of having a stand alone player so I'm not fully closed minded on the subject. -Brian |

![]() The PS3 is easily upgradeable.... plays all regions, and since we're at a point of diminishing returns for PQ (in my opinion) I don't think you'll be able to see a difference in PQ from the PS3 to a stand-alone... The PS3 is loud, and bulky..... and the remote is Blue-tooth rather than IR, but despite those things, I decided to stick with PS3s until a dedicated player comes out that is capable of the connectivity, etc... of the PS3 |

Not much experience with stand alone players so far,
I updated the FW on my friends Samsung BD1000 twice (that's a crap player for sure,.. I don't think he can play lots of the new discs even with the latest and likely last FW). I tried to play around with one of the newer Sony players in BJ's but it either wasn't working correctly or they had it setup in a demo mode in which most buttons were dis-abled. I don't play video games much at all and I build a dedicated Home Theater so stand alone may be great for me next time around... I shouldn't be so pushy about the PS3... Guess I'm just so happy with mine.. it's an easy recommendation. (I do like the look of the Denon players... They would go nice in my rack where the only other thing is my Denon AVR.... maybe someday.) Last edited by bhampton; 08-12-2008 at 05:47 PM. |

It's like comparing PC's to Mac's. They're about the same cost and they do basically the same thing. Some PC's are bulky and loud, but if you're willing to pay more for asthetics and possibly be losing performance and features, you can go with a Mac. In that case the PC would be the PS3 and the Mac would be a standalone.

It's not like the "Nuon Enhanced" or "progressive scan" DVD players of the past...... you're talking about incremental improvements in PQ, in terms that wouldn't be noticeable on a 50" screen...... I'd say it's safe to go with another PS3, but again, there are many good Stand-Alones for $500, and the fan noise, remote issue, etc... may push you to them, and I'd say you wouldn't be "wrong" for getting a stand-alone.... that's for sure.....

Seriously, does any stand-alone load faster than the PS3? I'm not up to date with all the new stand-alone players but last I heard, some take a long time to load java enhanced titles... The main issue with the ps3 for most of us would be the noise... For the IR capability just get something like the Blu-wave and that problem is solved! |
