I personally this is best lossless audio format. I welcome any studio that puts out blu with this format.

All the lossless formats should sound the same. It's the source material that matters.

I really hope that Disney stays with uncompressed audio for their movies. I could care less about Miley Cyrus. And some of the old titles in the vault, such as Bambi and whatnot, wouldn't need anything fancy on the audio - but the Blu treatment would do them well!

I don't know why this is hard for some people on this forum to understand. It should be in all of our sigs.

Perhaps when a new member signs up he has to digitally sign a form acknowleding that he's read Blu-ray 101!

I hope that's not the "training" that CC and BB employees get!

I don't think that they are "going DTS HD MA," but almost all concert Blu-rays seem to use the DTS HD MA audio codec. Perhaps they realize how much better the instrument mixes sound through the DTS mixing process?

So, my point is that perhaps it will just be for music/concert based product that they will use DTS HD MA.

It may also just be because it is 7.1. Wasnt it originally announced as Dolby THD 7.1?

Perhaps it is a big PITA to do a 7.1 THD track vs. doing a 7.1 DTS MA track.

There are a few PCM and DTS MA 7.1 tracks, but very few, if any, 7.1 THD tracks.

But if that was the case, why wouldnt they just do a 7.1 PCM track? Perhaps a free trial as dobyblue suggests? Who knows. I just find it very interesting.

*shrug*

They probably remixed it at La Casa, which encodes in DTS (and not a true 7.1 mix, but a re-mix from the original 5.1 masters).

Note they also knocked the resolution down to 16-bit. Pretty much all recent Disney releases have been 24-bit PCM or TrueHD.

Mixing? I don't want them "mixing" anything any more than I'd want Dolby mixing anything.
Encoding perhaps.

I hope not.

From HDD on Shine a Light:
Quote:
The DTS-MA mix sounds loudest out of the box. After level matching, it still had a brighter quality than the TrueHD and PCM that I wasn't quite as keen on. High-end frequencies were a bit too harsh for my taste, and I preferred the naturalism of the TrueHD mix in particular.
Now before you say "well that's Bracke" our own Blu-ray.com reviewer agrees:
Quote:
I much preferred the TrueHD surround track. In step with my observations from other titles, the DTS-HD MA mix sounds a touch brighter and more digital or harsh than other high resolution formats. It is almost like an unnatural bloating of the treble and bass that sucks out the midrange.
Also note that some of the best reviewed concert materials, such as Dave Matthews, use TrueHD.

Though i hate this type of music, nice to see Disney releasing quality on the music side, problem is they'll always have cookie cutter music...

And arush, expect Bambi to get the full 7.1 uncompressed treatment Sleeping
Beauty is getting...Whenever it does come out..

It could be a sign Disney is testing the waters for future releases. Now that the PS3 fully decodes DTS-HD MA, most of the installed BD player base can now hear it fully. I honestly hope Disney switches to DTS-HD MA. With New Line being destroyed by Warner Brothers who never uses DTS, we need another studio now to go DTS. I don't ever expect Paramount or Warner to use anything but Dolby TrueHD.

A reason why they went 16 bit instead of 24-bit: efficiency problems with DTS-MA. They had to encode the film twice (2D/3D):

FilmMixer on AVS explains the efficiency differences:
Dolby TrueHD is a complete, "zipped" track of the LPCM that is fed into the encoder. It is a variable bit rate codec.

Quote:
DTS-HD MA is a different beast. It uses a lossy constant bit rate core. The encoder then encodes the difference between the decoded core and the master, and encodes the difference as the XLL extension. Because of the, shall we say, complex nature of the resulting audio which is being thrown out by the CBR core encoder (i.e. it is mostly low level, but complex, noise) the data rate of the extension may be higher than what the Dolby encoder produces.
The audio spec thread there shows that the DTS-MA versions are a couple gigabytes bigger, and at least a megabit of bandwidth more.

Why?

Less efficient.
Less support.
No dynamic range option.

And let's not forget possible damage to their audio gear:

What about the poor folks who don't use the internet message boards and have access to a thread like this:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1008620

You want to explain to them why their damaged equipment was worth something that would have sounded the same in TrueHD?

Personally i wish everyone would go Uncompressed.....

If Disney wants to use dts on most non classic stuff whatever...

But when we finally get Pinoccio or Snow White, Peter Pan, Bambi, etc. on blu they better be in 7.1 uncompressed.....

Oh great.

I couldn't care less what codec is used (lossless is lossless), but to answer your "points"

Less efficient. Who cares?
Less support. My gear does it, so who cares?
No dynamic range option. LOL, why would I use that?

Possible damage to their gear: FUD

I can just imagine the tears shed by some folks when Uni announced DTS MA support, I can't even imagine what will happen if Disney does too.

Until then, I will enjoy my Dolby THD 7.1 tracks............................. oh wait, no I won't.

I am fairly sure PCM is going the way of the dodo. For better or worse.

On the subject of Disney using DTS- MA 7.1, looks like they're gonna stick with it through the year. It's a known fact that Nightmare Before Christmas (due out next week- which I can't wait for) does have it, and in the recent couple of days, it appears that both the new Narnia and Wall-E (plus whatever Pixar catalog title comes that day- I'm willing to bet it'll be either The Incredibles of A Bug's Life 10th Anniversary- but that's OT) will be getting it too. I just hope that the Kill Bill releases next month and Sin City (whenever that comes out- I think it'll be early '09) that those two get it. Disney/ Buena Vista's always been the best studio IMO for blu-ray, and this just adds to it.
