We're not exactly surprised. We've been using the PS3 as our reference Blu-ray player at CNET since it was released, and you'll notice that it tops our best Blu-ray players list by quite a margin. Furthermore, it's worth noting that video quality expert Joe Kane help set up Criterion's new home theater room. When we checked out Joe Kane's demo of the truly awesome SP-A800B at CES, we specifically asked what Blu-ray player he thought had the best image quality, he immediately said the PS3. So if you're worried about the image quality of a "game console" versus a high-end standalone Blu-ray player, it's worth rechecking your assumptions when CNET, Criterion and Joe Kane all vouch for the PS3's excellent performance.

Sweet. As most of us here on the PS3 forum are well aware, the PS3 is simply the most outstanding Blu-ray player on the market, and continually improves with each firmware release.

Side note: Welcome back Shin-Ra! You need to post more often!

Wow. A nice load of gear there Criterion. I use a vp50 pro & a PS3 & I'm happy, though I don't have the nice HD SDI connection.

Anyone who I preach to Blu about, I tell them to buy the PS3 since it does everything you could want for an entertainment system and is the tops in Blu, as well.

I'm just itching for Criterion to announce their first release date.
And whether Blu Ray spine numbering will be reset or be in line with the DVD numbers.

Why is it so impossible for anyone (including Sony) to build a better Blu-Ray player than the PS3 at a reasonable price? Doesn't the PS3 have a lot of components (e.g. hard drive) the costs of which could go into higher quality A/V components for the same price?

It is comforting to know the PS3 has such spectacular street cred.

I can put off my stand alone upgrade that much longer.

Because everyone else is releasing consumer electronics devices, and not games consoles. There are different margins on hardware. Sony doesn't expect a return on their tech investment with the sales of the hardware anytime in the near future, they expect it with the software sales.

The Consumer Electronics Devices have to justify a good deal of cost on the cost of the hardware alone, which was one of the talking points Toshiba used against the console in terms of market friendliness for the formats.

One thing I do take offense at though.

The whole thing isn't controlled by a Harmony 890 :P. The PS3 certainly isn't [unless they're leaving out an after-market third party solution].

Ah how I hope for a BT enabled Harmony.

[ edit ]
And having actually read the article, they do in fact, use the Nyko adapter. Course it can't turn it on, but hey .

People have to realize that the PS3 is not priced at the same margins a standalone player is priced at. If a PS3 was never intended to be a videogame console, it would be priced around $600 to $700 for a decent enough profit margin. That is why the PS3 is a much better value than the other BD players.
