I'm going to take the plunge and buy my first blu ray player this weekend. From reading the forums it seems like most people would say to get the PS3 as my player. I'm dont need it for upconverting dvds as I have a toshiba HD and an oppo upconverting player already. I am just concerned if I use it to watch a lot of movies and my kids wind up using it to play a bunch of video games, is it going to wear out faster than the panasonic? Any thoughts?

No.. PS3 is a very versatile machine. I sold mine and bought the BD30k but it was not for a bad reason. The fan made to much noise during calm passage, the Remote issue (i have a harmony) and the fact that it was heating my room alone (because it generate 140W when watching bluray)
If those aren't issues, go for it. It have complete spec (if you care) and it's fast! |

How loud is the fan? Is it noticeable when watching movies?

I just bought a BD30K yesterday for my second Blu-ray player. I also have a PS3. I would recommend getting the BD30K if all you want to do is play high-def movies. If you want to play high-def movies and video games then go with the PS3 and get a 3 year warranty for it or something. Mine used to get really hot and it malfunctioned. Try to keep yours in a cool environment.
Hope this helps. BTW, the BD30K is badass!!! ![]() ![]() |

I have PS3 and the only time I hear the fan is when I first turn it on then it goes quiet. Heat has never been an issue either. I am not going to bag on the Panny but the PS3 is worth checking out. You can do a lot with the PS3 and more than games. I am a "money's worth" kind of a guy and now love my PS3. Either way your going to have a nice BD player.

That can only be experience at you're home and by yourself.
There's like 4-5 speed to the fan. Depending on the room the fan stay at 1-3x Mine kicked in 3x pretty fast and during quiet moment it was very audible. My guess is you buy it at Walmart or any store with 30 days return policy and try it if you like it. Some people don't care about noise ... it's really a personnal thing. But my BD30k fan never even turn on (it's spin when POWER ON and shut off after) and it's running at Room temperature so it doesn't add heat.. |

My opinion is the PS3 is $100 cheaper so for everything you get it is the best BR player for the money!!

This is possible with the BD-30 but not with the PS3. I paid $25 cheaper than a 40G PS3. (direct from Panasonic no less!) |

I've had a PS3 since it came out in 06' and the BD30 since it came out last year. IMO, as for playing BD's, the Panny has a little better PQ and I have a newer receiver, so it bitstreams everything fine. The PS3 loads faster, but I watch 10 movies on my panny before I watch one on my PS3. I do not game anymore, so that questions is moot.
If you want a better BD player, buy the Panny. If you want an all-in-one, buy the PS3 |

Is there a coax or optical output on the ps3 or is it all analog out besides the hdmi ? I dont have a HDMI compatable receiver and need an optical or coax out.

Also keep in mind that the PS3 uses 'pinch rollers' to grab the disc instead of having a disc tray. |

In your situation, I would suggest the PS3. It's a great BD player and the gaming option is always there for the kids (or yourself). As for wearing it out, as a gaming machine, I would think the drive is designed for extended use. Gamers can rack up a lot of hours. Just my .02 |

Why hasn't anybody brought up DMP-BD50? Is the 30 even profile 1.1 or 2.0 capable? Even then, the PS3 does everything both of them do except bitstream the advanced codecs. This is what you have to decide...
Wireless for better 2.0 connectivity- PS3 Bitstream of TrueHD and DTS HD MA (only applies if you have a newer receiver capable of internal decoding of those codecs)- BD50 I wouldn't even consider the 30, unless it's a matter of finances. |
