Default Panasonic DMP-BD30K Blu-Ray

Anyone own one of these? This model seems to be getting good reviews for the most part, but I've read 1 or 2 posts where people say it does a horrible job of upscaling standard DVD's. Is this true? I like the price of this unit, however, I want my existng DVD library to look as good. Any opinions?

Yes I do have one and I am really happy with it. Great quality and upconverts just fine - no issues at all. It does load BD pretty quick as well

It's a great player. I used to have the 10A model and now own two 30 models. The picture quality is amazing and far superior to the 10a model. The only downside is that there are constant firmware upgrades and future models coming out. I may take one of my 30 models back and exchange for a PS3 which seems to be more future proof and probably sell my other 30 in a few months when the 50's come out. Great player though. The upscaling for standard DVD's is great too.

i have heard great things about it.
my next bd player will be when profile 2.0 is happening.
i'm not gonna buy a 1.1 player then have to buy another one down the road.

it's a fantastic player and i have had nothing but great luck with mine. it upconverts amazing. all my standard dvd's look amazing, infact i still rent alot of standard dvd's at blockbuster (because not enough blu's to rent right now) and they look amazing as well. i cant understand anyone saying anything bad about this player. i would not hesitate on bit to buying one, you wont be disappointed at all

I'm lost when in comes to profile 1.1, 2.0, etc. What does this mean? If I buy this player, it will be my only Blu Ray player for a long time. I don't want to worry about the player becoming obsolete in terms of not being able to do firmware updates. Can this player be upgraded later on?

Its a great player with one flaw:

If you choose to enable secondary audio in setup. It will disable all high def audio.

If you do PiP you cant do HD audio.

A pain in the ass if you want to change it everytime you want to watch PiP

this is a minor flaw since for blu ray very few movies support PIP

but for future, this will be a pain in the ass

This is why player decoding is the preferred solution.

However the player should only disable bitstreaming audio if secondary audio is being played. I don't see why it would disable it if it isn't being played.

Should this matter if you have a receiver that can decode Dolby® True HD and DTS-HD® Master Audio? What about updating the firmare? Some say Panasonic is charging owners a fee to have a firmware disc mailed to you. Whats up with that?

Download it and burn it yourself.

I have this player, and absolutely LOVE it. I'll probably get the BD50 (profile2.0) when it comes out. I haven't run into any issues with the BD30 so far. I highly recommend it.

However, I will ONLY recommend it IF you plan to get a receiver that can decode the bitstreamed HD audio codecs. Otherwise go for something that can decode internally.

That's because it's bitstreaming the audio until you do PiP, at which point it's doing live audio mixing. Since it can't internally decode those codecs, it can't mix it

Hypothetically BD50 will be fine

They haven't given the 50 a date yet except summerish I believe

Yeah, I agree with you, IF you have a receiver that can decode I would definitely get this player... but if not, I would try a player that decodes internally. I have two and so far have been outstanding.
