Default Blu-ray Studios' one-two punch at the weekend box office Feb16-18

1. Ghost Rider - Sony - 44.5 million
2. Bridge To Terabithia - 22 million

I'm really looking forward to Terabithia in blu-ray more so than Ghost Rider

Look at the studio that released the movies. It's kinda obvious.

I'll be checking Ghost Rider out on Tuesday. Cheap night at the theaters.

So just because the studio that released the movie supports Blu that means they'll be releasing a Blu version? If only...

The way you guys posts these threads it's as if there have already been release announcements. That's why I get confused.

umm, well assuming a studio doesn't become neutral or change sides, you can expect it on blu

The reason people bring these up even without release dates is that Blu-Ray studios (exclusive and neutral alike) continue to have most of if not all of the recent blockbuster movies. This means the HD-DVD only crowd will miss out on some of the top flicks while BR owners won't miss out on any. I think Children of Men is probably the biggest movie at this point to be HD-DVD only.

In the end, great news for HD-DVD!
( heavy sarcasm there )

Anything that does well in theaters by a member of the BDA, will end up in a blue case. End of story. Sony and friends do well at the box office, they do well at the home video market. Universal makes crap and loses money on most films they make these days, so they need to do whatever it takes to sell movies to people and make up the money they lost in theaters.

if you look at the pattern, studios more likely to publish new releases out on blu-ray sooner than older catalogues, just because new releases sell better on blu-ray. Look at The Departed, Casino Royale, The Prestige, Babel, Crank all are the best selling blu-ray titles and all are new releases

More new releases coming, Eragon, Rocky Balboa, Night at the Museum. So it's almost expected these titles are days and date with the DVD version

Ghost Rider is from Sony Pictures, so Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (duh) will have this flick on Blu.
Bridge To Terabithia is from Walt Disney Pictures (aka Buena Vista), so Buena Vista Home Entertainment will have this flick on Blu, too.
If only Sony and Buena Vista would use DTS on their blu discs.
Anyhoo, fully expect these movies on Blu later this year. It's not rocket surgery.

The reason the new movies sell better is because your not replacing a dvd but making a fresh purchase. Quite a few of my Blu titles are ones I already had on dvd but love them enough to want the best presentation possible.Nobody will be replacing Casino Royale because its released same day as standard so it sells big period.

Default great momentum now, but...

this is a bit off topic, but I finally registered at the hidefdigest forums, and it seems some studios from the blu-ray camp are releasing HD DVDs outside of US.

With this process, it seems this will be a longer, drawn out war. Alot of die hard HD DVD fans even would go as far to order from none US vendors, basically importing them instead of switching format to BR.

Maybe we are just too happy to see thru the illusion...

I think this is, and someone please correct me if I am wrong, mostly due to some films having multiple distributors worldwide.

Also, as we have seen just in the last couple of days, French company Studio Canal + (who used to own Universal and were exclusive to HD-DVD) turn "neutral".

And sales of HD-DUD in the rest of the world, compared to the US and Japan are pretty minute... and the ps3 launch is in Europe is just around the corner... so maybe it will be a drawn out battle, if your personal definition of a drawn out battle is 6-9 months.

that's where the flaw of their logic. They complain about expensive BD players, and yet the got hit a few more extra dollars for each movie they import.

Yep, and the general public doesn't know that, just geeks on forums like us. Also, it's just a handful of titles that are at least $40-50 each with 3-week shipping and they look like crap, have PAL sped-up soundtracks and no extras (funny how HD-DVD people complain about BD's having none and go flock to buy these for a premium). I feel bad when I go to an HD-DVD forum and I see everyone getting excited about releases from other continents, because there's nothing coming out here. Well almost feel bad
