Default Pairing with B&W 600s - Receiver Choices Under $1,000?

Back when I was still set on going with either Polk and Klipsch as my L/C/Rs, I was near set on either an Onkyo 705 or a Yamaha 663 - but if I intend to move on up to Bowers and Wilkins speakers, should I also up the ante on my receiver?

I'm not too knowledgeable about brands such as Denon or Marantz, or even if they make good choices under a thousand (although in all reality I'm thinking a cap of $700) - I do know that the new Denon AVR-1909 seems solid (Marantz SR-5002??) - but as I do my reading on another tab, I wanted to know other opinions from this forum.

Thanks, chaps.

...or perhaps should I stick with the original choices I had in mind?

I love the sound of Marantz... The 7002 went on sale previously for $900 or so.. i think Beta has a 5001, check with him on it (though I'm sure he loves it).

With the PS3 as your BD player, you may be able to find a model from last year that accepts HDMI... That could save you some cash/allow to to step up a model without paying for decoders you won't use..

I would say Marantz as well, but for speakers that good I would recommend an even better amp. It will cost more I realize, but those are too good of speakers to underpower with a receiver.

See, here's the thing, eventually, Slec, I plan on picking up a Panasonic 50 as my main - so I would need the decoders. Is the 5002 a good choice? I'll ask Beta about his 5001.

Edit: Hmm, never mind, it appears only the 7002 does everything I need, and - $1,400. Hmm. Ow.

now that I'm thinking about it, I'm pretty sure the current model 7002's are where the lossless decoding is added...

yep...
7002
5002

Refurb 7002's (from authorized reseller) are $870... a bit out of your range, but IMO the stretch would be worth it.... Are you able to listen to any of your possible choices mated to these speakers?

In all honesty, it didn't come up until today, when I made my firm decision on the B&Ws. Now I have to go out and browse about the other receivers. Nothing as far as Denon goes, then, Slec?

I'd have to go out and find someone who sells Marantz to see if they would do the hookups for me.

Even though I own the Yamaha - up the ante son! You won't regret it.

I haven't heard the 1909. The 3808 was on my radar but I couldn't swing the price. Flirted with an Elite 92TXH but ultimately i was comparing everything to the 7002 and that was it for me. I've actually tried twice to buy one and lady luck has made me cancel the orders... I'm looking at the 7001 route for now but just got a new sub so it'll be a few more months until I can upgrade again.

back on topic..not a perfect comparison but Denon:Marantz :: Nissan:Infiniti

I'm trying to, Dad, but give me a recommendation!

Damn, Slec! I don't even want to know what Yamaha or Onkyo would be like if the Marantz is only an Infiniti.

Currently, I'm looking at the 600 series as my LCRs, a Martin Logan Dynamo sub, and some other floorstandings for my surrounds given my room layout, something along Polk Monitor 50s.

Argh...this is tough. Changing my fronts means changing my receiver. Didn't know that. And if it means changing my sub, I'll go crazy, I might have to go back to other choices.

I was more trying to same they are in the same family, one is just the higher end of the family... I easily could have used any other car manufacturers.

I think I found you a winner
Yamaha 1800...now, add to cart, use coupon code AFLYAM768 and it will be $768...that's a great deal on this receiver, saves you $431

I thought you wanted to change your receiver.. if you don't then I'm confused are you starting all over on your audio setup?

So the 1800 is a good pick? I'll go have a listen.

Right now, Slec, I have a HTiB setup run through optical. Spent the last 3 months researching, listening, etc, etc. Of course I want to change my receiver! This is a complete overhaul!

My father in law has one. I think it's a solid receiver, burr brown DAC's decodes everything, good power pushing 5 channels (although 7 leaves much to be desired)

I'll probably only push 5 through it for the time being, maybe not 7 until Christmas bonus money comes in,

What I don't want to do is have to rethink everything. What I meant to say earlier was that I didn't know that changing my speaker mindset would also change my receiver mindset. Prices keep going up - I've set myself a max of $3,000; and pushing that might start interfering with other things I have planned.

I'll go and try and have a listen to the Yammy 1800 - although I think they can only hook it up to the Klipsch and Polk, the stores I visited that had B&W did not have Yamaha receivers.

Then just keep in mind that the Yammy drops to 55watts/channel into 7... 103watts/channel into 5 (both at 8 ohms)...

If you have a sound Advice/tweeter, they usually carry Focal which are great sounding speakers

That's what I was using for Polk/Klipsch, a Sound Advice. Thanks for all the help, it's much appreciated.

I think I'm going to end up with the Denon 2309. Chances are that come January, I'll sell that and pick up the Marantz 7002. It'll be a solid holdover choice, I'm going to go hook up the 683s to it and test em out.
