Default Wolverine In Trouble

Quote:
It seems my favorite superhero is about to enter the land of ugly rumors. According to Hollywood Elsewhere, there's trouble on the set of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. It seems that director Gavin Hood and Fox co-chairman and CEO Tom Rothman are butting heads over the look and feel of the film.

Hood, being a smart man who knows his character, wants the film to be dark and gritty. Rothman wants a happier, friendlier, Iron Man sort of film. Apparently, things came to a head at least once on set when Hood came to work to find one of his dingy and somber sets completely repainted into something brighter and more cheerful. (I bet they even put one of those "Hang in there!" kitten posters on the wall.) The set revamp had been done on Rothman's orders, who has a reputation for being stubborn and micromanaging. It's not clear from the second-hand story who won out on this particular battle, but if we see a chirpier set design on opening day, we'll know.

Word around town had production troubled for awhile (it's all anyone talked about prior to the footage screening at ComicCon, though it's all been very hush hush) -- and I'm also under the impression from ComicCon that the film has finally wrapped, so all this set redecoration may be very old and irrelevant news. Perhaps Hood has already won out, as the teaser footage certainly suggested that it was a bit grittier than Iron Man or the previous X-Men films. Please, let that be the case. If I'm disappointed by Wolverine (and I inevitably will be), I don't want it to be because my beloved Logan has a penchant for kitten posters.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine opens May 1st, 2009.

1. Richard Donner axed from Superman II--final cut wasn't as strong as what he had envisioned.
2. Joss Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer film in '92 was completely butchered and so far removed from his original intentions, which is what made him create the tv show that turned enormously successful.

Those are just two examples. Wolverine is a very dark and gritty character and this film has the potential to be a fascinating film if it deals suitably with Woleverine's complexity and intensity--another reason why The Dark Knight was so successful. I enjoyed the X-Men films, but I've always felt they were a little watered down, especially when compared to the comic book characters. For example Rogue... a very interesting and complex character in the comics who was essentially stripped down to a bland version played by Anna Paquin. I think the XMen films lightly touched on many of the interesting philosophical issues presented in the comics, but fell shy of really digging deeper and exploring them past the surface. The stuff with the cure could have been much more fascinating than it really was. The films in general would have been much better if the characters were more true representations of the comic books and even earlier cartoons, but I guess FOX wanted to make them more mass audience friendly... though the Dark Knight shows that mass audiences don't mind dark material.

Here's to hoping creativity trumps business politics with the new Wolverine film.

There is no way that Woverine is a "happy" little pup. But what do I know anyways?

This all started from a friend of a guy who was around the set that didn't really see the whole thing...

I say let's wait and see how things play out.

I was at the Comiccon presentation, and Hugh Jackman definitely hinted at a R rating, saying that Wolverine has to be "Badass" (He was very hyper about the whole movie).

Default Miller's Touch

Frank Miller needs to write the movie for Wolverine. He did wonders for the old Dark Knight comic book which I think was modeled for the new batman. And we know how well that turned out.

Frank Miller is a genius from his comic books to his movie scripts: 300, sin city, etc. He wrote a comic for Wolverine a long time ago. Check it out and you'll understand why he needs to be involved in any Wolverine picture.

Frank Miller penciled the very successful 4 part Wolverine mini-series in 1982. It was one of his earlier works that put him on the map.

Actually, that was because they were working from earlier drafts of a discard 90's New World Pictures "Wolverine & the X-Men" followup to their proposed solo picture, in which Wolvie is now with the team and sent out to recruit/protect Kitty Pryde--
Practically all the Singer film did was change the name and powers.

I think there should be a balance but defenitely leann towards darker story line especially for his origin for comics I think the script is gonna be really imporetant the plots and story lines are already established and the should stick too it just like they kinda did with batman. Also I think they can get by with a pg-13 rating easily if they keep the gore to lord of the rings like levels. And it will do better at the box office.
