Default Amazon Sales Tax for NY

That dreaded day is finally arriving for us NYers, saw this at checkout when I went to pre-order a few upcoming BDs at Amazon

"Due to a new law recently passed by the State of New York we are required to collect NY sales taxes on taxable items sold by Amazon.com on or after June 1st, 2008. If your order is placed prior to June 1st, your Order Total may not include an estimate of NY sales taxes, but those taxes may still be charged if your order is readied for shipment on or after that date."

Sucks!

I think I read that Texas was going to sue Amazon for back-taxes as well. They appear to have a distro near the DFW area and this is grounds for collecting taxes. If so, the end may be near. I guess I'll have to move to Canada!?!

We'll have to wait for it to be official but it's a safe bet that the tax will be whatever the tax is in the state in question. So, 8.25% for us here...

I'm glad I moved to CO.

...but like this guy running for congress here said, "There are good taxes." Conclusion: He got booed at and only 4% of the delegates votes, so I guess his name gets taken off the ballot.

NY sales tax varies depending where you are in the state...5 boroughs the tax is 8.375%, Nassau and Suffolk are 8.625%. It varies throughout the state by county, 7% being the lowest and 9.50% being the highest in some

I don't like that law makers look at taxing the internet as their "silver bullet" to balance their budgets. It's just plain laziness on the part of government. FAIL

Sorry, to revive this thread, but I just received this email from Newegg:
Quote:
Dear Valued Newegg Customer,
As a result of recent changes in New York State tax law requiring certain out-of-state retailers to collect and remit sales taxes to the State of New York, we began collecting applicable sales tax for all orders shipped to New York addresses starting June 1, 2008.

After careful review and consideration, we are pleased to inform you that we have stopped collecting New York sales tax, effective August 21, 2008. This decision was driven by your direct and candid feedback and our continued commitment to you as our valued customers.
Maybe Amazon will follow

I'm surprised that Arizona hasn't done this too. I pretty sure the is a wherehouse hear. Yay they could tax me for money for road work on the 101 that will never get done and close the highway every weekend.

i live in California and Amazon charges me tax now my last order from them from last month didnt have it so i guess its something new but i tried to buy a few things and all of a sudden they asked me for sales tax. and also if you choose the free shipping method you have to buy $40 worth of items now it used to be like $25 or $30

I suggest everyone write in protest against this, regardless of whether you live in NY or not. Who's to say this wont eventually apply to your state? Hopefully with enough pressure, that will cause Amazon to fight this even harder

I can honestly say I'm very glad to be back in the great state of NY.

Most of the tax we're hit with in the rest of the state (I'm in western NY, Buffalo area) goes to subsidize NYC. When Sept 11th happened, how do you think all that cleanup and overtime got paid for? Partly from the state, which means the rest of the state suffered to support NYC.

So do me a favor - when anybody, from any where, visits NYC - Spend a ton of money so Albany stops taking mine to give to NYC!!!
