Bluray is good and all, it is a much sharper picture, but i feel like it isnt anything to kill for. I like blu, and wont go back to dvds, but I feel like it isnt worth $700 for a player (granted i didnt spend that much but you get the idea)

Please dont slam me by saying my setup sucks because thats not the case.
Yeah your setup still sucks.

So let me get this straight....
1. you go to blu-ray.com and ask/say you think blu-ray is over rated then say you don't want to get slammed.... on the internet where anonymity reigns supreme....

2. you admit that once you have an HDTV the picture doesn't look nearly as good with DVD but blu-ray provides a sharper picture and you won't go back to DVD...

It does what its supposed to do. no one even sells old style tv's any more (that i know of) so wouldn't this just be part of a logical progression?

for me, audio > video so blu-ray is 3-4 steps above DVD...

I don't know if it's overrated, but that quality was long overdue. I think it is what DVD should have been from the beginning ten years ago - and if we had it back then, there would be no hype about it today - so in that regard, I think it's overrated.

i didnt contradict myself, i was just stating a point okay. I just dont think bluray in the end is worth hundreds of dollars. Maybe $300 at most, but def not 7 or 8 hundred.

Blu-ray seems like its only for hardcore film watchers, but everyone I know say dvd is fine and theres no reason to spend a ton of money on something that was never a problem before. Bluray is just another improvement in technology and thats cool and all, but it isnt really needed i suppose I dont know

Okay, then don't
Some people where completely happy with VHS.

If you don't like it, fine. But the rest of us here love it and are happy paying a premium for it.

- maybe your equipment is just terrible

now we're getting somewhere

What was your expectation coming in? What do you think the average consumer expectation is? Just walking around B&M stores blu-ray is how many LCD's and plasmas are shown off. People take these sets home and feel their movies and tv shows don't look as good as they did at the store. blu-ray helps to bring that theater like experience into the home. unfortunately we're still early in the format so prices are high, and some transfers aren't top notch... that will change with time.

As for player pricing, $300 is touted about as the magic number. it's probably pretty close and rumor has it that players will start appearing around this point (on a wide scale) around the holiday season...

Most blu-ray players do only cost $300-$400.They have not been 700 -800 in about a year.

yes we are getting somewhere, and i apologize for before. But i never thought theater experience was better than dvd. Yes audio quality in a theater is better, but picture quality for a movie theater always seemed a step down from DVD.

Open your mind my friend... you are talking about a global forum here. The demographic of contributors goes far beyond any government established borders.

And, as for your opinion? It's an opinion that doesn't belong here. 99.9999999999999999999999% of people who frequent this site are all in agreement that Blu-ray is far superior to DVD. With the proper equipment it is a night and day different.

As for my opinion? Because of the extremely high quality available on Blu-ray I have come to understand that a viewing experience is 65% sound for me now. And, with uncompressed/lossless audio there is a lightyear's distance for me. Mind you, I also spent thousands of dollars on the proper audio equipment to get the most out of the format. Perhaps you need to spend some more money in order to maximize your entertainment experience.

WTF?!?!?! ARE YOU KIDDING?!?!?! The film they use to project in theatres is actually twice the resolution as Blu-ray! It is 4K where Blu-ray is outputting video at just under 2K! Perhaps the theatres in your town need to have their prjector lenses and/ore projection booth windows severely cleaned? Add to this the fact that the image is blown up to a 100+ foot screen and your arguement is moot.

Well it's twice the linear resolution, it's not twice the total resolution, which is about 8 million pixels, versus 2 million pixels, which makes it 4 times the number of pixels. measuring either the horizontal or vertical gives you double the figure.

GOSH stop fighting people... it's not friggen worth it. Grow up children!

+1 i do not find it to be overrated at all. It is well worth the money in my opinion! The prices might knock the shine off of it a bit but still the quality of blu-ray is not overrated to me..... but thats just my opinion.

I couldn't agree more with the OP. Anyone who owns more than 359 titles is insane. Oh wait, UPS dropped off a package. Make that 360 titles.
