Default New Gamer Need Advice.

Well as the title suggests I am just now getting in to games other than sports games and have a question. With titles like MGS4, God of War, Call of Duty, etc. would it benefit me to go back and play the earlier PS and PS2 games before I delve into the latest PS3 installments? Or would this be somewhat of a waste of time/money? Thanks in advance!

Also, I'd love for some "must buy" suggestions. Here is a list of what I already own:

1) Fight Night: Round 3
2) GTA: IV
3) Burnout Paradise
4) Ratchet & Clank
5) Uncharted
6) Madden 08 (will trade or sell for cheap if interested)
7) NCAA 09

For metal gear it would really be worth it to back and play the other three it will make the 4th better plus you will be more connected to the characters.

I personally don't think that you don't have to go and play 1 and 2 to play 3..

I would also recommend Ressistance:FOM...you can get it for 29.99 now also Heavenly Sword..

for metal gear you can get the metal gear encyclopedia from the PSN store, it will have all the info on everything metal gear and it will black out any spoilers to MGS4 because it uses your game save

The only thing that the Essential Collection doesn't include is Metal Gear 1 and 2, which I believe was only on the Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence edition.

The Call of Duty series have never been tied to each other that you would be hurting if you've never played the previous versions. Especially with Call of Duty 4, since the previous 3 Call of Duty's have been in the WWII era whereas CoD4 is set in the modern era.

Thanks for the replies. How long do these games generally take to complete? I'll definitely be itching to get to MGS4, lol. And how bout the God of War series? Are the first 2 worth playing? Thanks again for all the responses!

The time varies from player to player and on skill level for the most part. As far as God of War, most DEFINITELY get the first two! I know that the first GoW has already hit Greatest Hits status so definitely a cheap pickup. Can't recall if GoW2 has hit GH status yet, anyone care to add in?

I'd definitely suggest playing the older games first simply because they are far cheaper than the brand new games (as mentioned, MOST are $20 now). The other reason to play the cheaper, older games is so that you KNOW whether or not you like the type of game play each one offers. I haven't played more than 15 minutes of MGS4 even though I've had it for 2 months, because I was never really thrilled with the style of game play (*dons flame-retardant clothing*).

I personally love RPGs (addicted to crack, AKA Disgaea 3 right now), but it takes a VERY special type of person to enjoy them.

I would suggest:

1. Battlefield: Bad Company
2. Soul Calibur IV (if you like fighting games)
3. Facebreaker (Coming 9/3)
4. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (Coming 9/16, but free demo is now available thru PSN download)
5. Mercenaries 2 (Coming 8/31 or 9/1)
6. Grand Turismo 5: Prologue

Dude if you can get your hands on MGS 1-3 fairly painlessly, than I would recommend that you do play through them. It will make MGS4 so much more enjoyable. It's the final chapter of the series and it's brilliance is bolstered by the previous games in the series.

If you are interested in fantasy/RPGs at all, I would recommend The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. That game will keep you occupied for months if you like that sort of thing.

Also on the fantasy side you can check out two of most respected PS2 games out there: Ico and Shadow of the Colossus.
