I guess you could say im the "Home Theater Virgin"
Current Setup: JVC RX-6000V Samsung BD-P1500 Samsung LN-T3242H PS3 HTPC custom built 2 Book shelf speakers (from old boom box) Ok, Ive had this receiver for some time. Ive pieced together my own setup back when i was a freshman in high school. Sold it all wasnt gettin any use. I started back up, kinda, when I got my PS3 about a year ago, found my receiver and some old speakers. Im not looking for cheap In-The-Box setup, Onkyo seem to be the brand to buy theses days. I will keep looking into the 605/606 receiver. I want something with a lot of HDMI. 7.1 is preferred but 5.1 Is great. Ive heard a lot of great review about PolkAudio. I plan on upgrading to a 1080p Plasma also. I watch a lot of movie, play games and football! Now what Im torn in doing is Upgrading my old receiver or speakers? Any kind of help is greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long read Also... this one kind of goes to the people with HTPC, can the onkyo 606 be hooked up to the pc? im only using the asus soundcard that came with the motherboard. any help would be great thx Last edited by eyekyu; 12-29-2008 at 10:13 PM. |

I had a htib and the way I went with upgrading is I bought the receiver first. I still have the htib speakers that came with it and they play fine with my onkyo receiver. I do plan on upgrading the speakers when i do have more money. There will be an improvement in quality just a little bit with a good receiver. I would say get the onkyo 606 if you want to go with the onkyo brand. More hdmi inputs. Of course, the decision is up to you.

"Our first item is one that we mentioned in our last Newsletter. Our inventory of new stock of the Model 1070 Receiver has now sold out, and there will be no further production. Thus, the Model 1070 joins our list of "alumni" products. As also noted, while work is underway for a successor to the Model 1070, we do not expect it to ship until some time next year. Until then, we are replacing the traditional receiver with something better. Effective immediately, we are pleased to announce lower prices on two combo packages that make it possible for you to have the power and flexibility of separates at the price of a receiver. By pairing a state-of-the-art processor with your choice of multi-channel amplifier you may call these packages our "virtual receivers." Both combos are built around the Model 970, which shares the same feature package as the Model 1070, including a powerful CS 49400 series DSP, quadruple crossover AND analog bass management, lip sync delay, HDMI-compatible DVI switching, RS-232 upgradeability, eight digital audio inputs and two outputs, and much, much more. In addition, the 970 includes premium op amps in the critical analog path, something that raises the audible performance of this preamplifier/processor above the Model 1070's already high quality. The Model 970 processor paired with the Model 7075 power amplifier (7x75 watt, 20Hz- 20kHz@ 8O, all channels driven) is now available for $999, a $400 discount from the current price! This is only $100 more than the Model 1070 for more power, improved sonic resolution, and the flexibility of separates! The Model 970 processor paired with the Model 7125 power amplifier (7x125 watt 20Hz- 20kHz@ 8O, all channels driven) is now available for $1,298, which is also a $400 discount from the current price. This is an incredible value compared to mass-market AV receivers that claim to offer a full 125 watts to all channels, but which are really based on the "one channel at a time" power figures that are all too commonplace in today's market. Virtually any other receiver, or separates pair, with this level of features and "real" 7.1 power will cost you considerably more." |

^^ I hate spam. The 606 is an awesome receiver, that's the one that I'm upgrading to. As for a new speaker system, do you want a big speaker setup or a HTIB (home theater in box) setup? If you want a HTIB setup, a lot of people recommend the Polk Audio RM6750 as a nice 5.1 system that's inexpensive. Or if you want to build a larger setup, maybe start with Polk Monitor 50's, Polk CS1 and a Polk PSW10. That's a pretty nice setup for a good price

The Onkyo 606 is a great receiver. I've had it since August 2008 and it's been great. At first, it used to overheat pretty quickly, but now it hardly does anymore. As a matter a fact, I watched the entire LOTR trilogy on Christmas Day and after we finished watching them, the Onkyo wasn't even hot. I was amazed!
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() P.S. These are the speakers I have (below in my signature). These JBL's are awesome! Just PM if you have any questions about them. ![]() Here's the eBay link: http://cgi.ebay.com/JBL-CS6100-Compl...lenotsupported Here's the Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/JBL-CS6100BG-C...0521172&sr=1-1 Last edited by tuco87; 12-29-2008 at 02:30 AM. |

I have the Onkyo 606 and a HP pavillion HTPC that I use and I hooked it up to the reciever the first day i got it through HDMI and it would not play my download movies correctly the audio would skip and cut in and out i'm not sure if its just my soundcard or what. My computer has a Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio soundcard. I probably just haven't played around with the settings enough to get it to work right. Now if you wanting to hook it up with something diffferent then HDMI then yeah you could definately do that, what kind of audio out does your HTPC have a optical or something different?
