Default ? Audio from HDTV to HTIB Using Optic

I will be getting a 5.1 HTIB this weekend. At the moment I have my PS3 connected to the HDTV using HDMI. I have my satellite connected to the HDTV using S-video. Would I loose sound quality if I used the Optic Out on the HDTV to feed the HTIB instead of running everything through the HTIB then to the HDTV.

The optical sound out of the PS3 to the HTiB will be a WHOLE LOT better than the HDMI sound out of the PS3 to the TV itself.

You really really really should avoid a HTiB. You are keeping yourself from being able to enjoy the hidef codecs.

run hdmi to the tv and optical from the ps3 to the htib, and run separate cables from cable, sat, or any other source to the htib.

Well I'm hoping that he doesn't realize the huge mistake he's about to make - and that we can save him and get him going down the right path

I am some what hard of hearing so everything is lossless to me. I am looking for something better than the HDTV speakers. I play COD4 and want to know what direction someone is comming from. I dont care to know if their shoes are untied or not.

Then do what D1 said. Optical (for audio) from PS3 to HTiB, HDMI (for video) from PS3 to TV. Run all other connections to HTiB if they have the proper inputs/outputs.

JJxiv, Your saying that the Optic is better than HDMI or that it would be better to go straight from the PS3 to receiver than from TV to receiver.

EDIT

You should also know you can save your money for a better setup for the same or similar pricing. Muddy bass is not very appealing to most.

Are you asking if connecting an optical cable to your TV then to your receiver is the best option? I wasn't aware TV's can do switching like that. I think you're misunderstanding how that works.

My HDTV has an Optical audio out. May just be a pass through but i dont think so. I would like to keep my equiptment connected as they are. So, HDMI from PS3 > tv then Optical > receiver

Unless it has a optical in and out, you can't connect the PS3 to the TV then the receiver.
