This is a high-end server solution, albeit you can get into it for under 10 grand is my guess...
But, it foreshadows the future in many ways. My only real questions about this are regarding the audio formats. But, with 45mbs 1080p, HDMI 1.3 and Deep Color, the video should be out of this world. Also of interesting note, those with mega-bucks to shell out can get same day as the theatrical release in Digital Cinema DCI format for 500 to 1000 bucks a movie, with a limited viewing window. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...0#post14624650 |

The point is they are high quality digital downloads, and they are here already. My worries about digital download is that it will be "good enough" for the average consumer, but fall short of blu-ray quality.
This gives hope. |

I read $500 - $1000 dollars to watch day and date with the theater.

There is another company out there called Entertainment Experience that is touting a similar service, and over a 70TB, yes, 70TB server solution, and DCI color gamut. (Same as digital cinema). |

There is also talk of distribution via Hard Disk. This is at the moment a high end solution for sure, and as far as the actual downloadable content it is only for the select few that have an un-restricted pipe to handle it. For myself, I figured at my maximum bandwidth it would take around 7 to 8 hours to download a 50GB data file. So that really isn't the issue, not so much as bandwidth restrictions imposed by ISP's. But, it is an exciting idea, for sure. Last edited by conradjohnsonfan; 09-09-2008 at 09:40 PM. |

For those with the $$$$, the day that even higher quality media is available for their theaters is now, not later. I love Blu-ray. I also will love anything that actually offers an even better experience. It is amazing how the mention of digital download, or any tech that will succeed and likely super-cede blu-ray is greeted by so many as an attack on "their" precious format and is not worth discussion. And yes, SOMETHING will take over blu-ray, someday. And it would not be surprising if it involves digital download. It is a short sighted statement to say it will never happen. |

Believe me it will be a long long time before this high end stuff is common place. Low end digital downloads are not yet common place.

1) the BW is less then BD 2) the BW is too high for DL and like the post you linked to mentions they think of distributing their films on BD50s . In the end all it is is PR for a proprietary lower quality version of the movie meant to be bought on BD and installed on their very expensive propriatery server that might or might not ever make it to market. |

Unless its distributed on multiple BDs (or a pile of DVDs) the only way to get anything new and improved to market in any reasonable timeframe, is via downloads. But, this is the exact opposite end of the consumer spectrum from Blu-ray's target. King of the mountain idiots perhaps will be scared, but it will do nothing to affect Blu-ray availability or adoption. Gary |

Even if we all had 50mbps connections, downloading anything resembling a Blu-ray would be 1x at best.
Seeing as the latest craze for ISPs is to cap bandwidth consumption, that kind of throws a wrench in the whole High Definition downloads machinery. Say a BD is 32GB on average... I have a 16mbps connection. 7.2GB per hour(roughly) 4.5 hours downloading at full capacity for 1 movie? Comcast is going to implement a 250GB cap(both ways combined) for me/us on Oct 1st. Pulling down a few BDs would put a dent in that cap, right? 2 per week would break it. PASS on the downloads! We won't get into the whole burning to disc, transfer to other devices limitations, or the DRM involved. |

Connect speeds of 30 million bits per second or faster will not be common for at least another 7 to 10 years. Even when those connect speeds are common, lots of people will still want to buy their movies, music and software on packaged, physical media. Quote:
