Ive been thinking about this for a while and have heard alot of people say that once downloading is perfected and out there any disc format will die. I just dont think these people realize that having a actual physical disc with case that can be put in a nice looking stand is paramount with most people. I love looking at the covers, the inserts, looking at my stand with 76 and counting blu-ray discs. Just being able to physically touch them makes people connect with movies more and gives a sense of ownership and pride. I have about 100 cds downloaded to my computer, I dont own the cds as of now and my music collection feels somewhat hollow. plus what happens if your system crashes or the download is corrupted or something. People will always want to hold something in there hands. Blu-ray will always be here while downloading may be coming, physical movies will always be in demand

Only bitter HD-DVD supporters are pushing for downloads. It is the biggest crock of s**t.

downloads have their place. they will be used like rentals to me. there are some movies such as underworld, talledega nights, king of new york, etc. that i am not willing to spend 20 bucks for a BD, but I am willing to spend 5 bucks for a 720p low bit download. there is a market for it and i expect the industry to meet demand.

The way I look at downloads is if you are willing to put out a certain amount of money for a 720p digital copy, would you rather get it for free at a performance cost?
I think some people would just rather download a free copy elsewhere and deal with SD than pay 5 dollars for a DRM 720p copy. |

Everyone knows that digital movie downloads will only affect the rental market for the forseeable future. Why? because downloading them to own isn't viable. How many people out there want to invest in huge hard drives to hold a movie collection? Digital downloads for rental purposes makes a lot of sense tho as people are already using PPV on a regular basis and the dowwnsides to it have been waiting to watch the movie at the time they've alloted for it and not being able to pause or rewind. They solved the pause/rewind problem with todays PVR recievers (tivo, etc), and now they can solve the time allotment problem with digital downloads.

Downloads or streaming have not replaced DVDs, neither will they replace Blu-ray in the foreseeable future. They can exist side-by-side. For my favorite films I want discs that I can move from one machine to another, travel with, give as gifts to friends, etc. I download movies from Jaman. These are films I cannot find on disc. I agree that downloads will be in the rental part of the market for most people. Who wants to buy massive servers with huge hard drives to store movies? A player with discs is a more versatile, mobile and modular way to go.
But then Bill Gates says that ultimately the human race does not want hard media. He can see the future. He knows how humanity will evolve. ![]() |

Downloads completely have a place as rentals. And imo it would be a fantastic technology for that.

As a person that has done a lot of downloading in the past....heck I'm a college student can't really afford the cost of many dvd's that I want. Im now replacing my digital collection with Blu-ray as I find them. I can't even compare the quality of blu vs. the high-def downloads that are out there. Its like night and day. Don't see how digital downloads can be the face of the future when blu has that much of an advantage.

As immature as it may be I think you're right. I hardly heard anything about HD movie downloads or BD player profiles before the WB announcement. After BD won all I've heard about are those two things.
