Default HP dv5-1003nr

I bought this laptop from best buy today and it plays blu ray movies fine until I try to hook it up to the tv through a hdmi connection. The play back stops immediatly and I get a message saying that the video can not be played at current resolution.

Do I need to use another program to play the movie? I tried changing the resolution but im not getting anywhere. Any ideas?

#1, be sure to only run either the TV or the laptop display, not both at the same time.

#2, is the TV HDCP compliant? What make and model is it?

HDCP - High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection
If the TV is not HDCP compliant, displaying Blu-ray Discs on it will fail or at best, look like SDTV.

What brand is the TV?
What model number is the TV?
Thanks!

Ok, that is covered then...
Have you updated the playback software you are using?
Have you tried other playback software?

This is almost certainly the issue. To get it working, connect the laptop to the TV (without a movie in the drive). When the cideo displays on the screen, go to your videocard propertied (I'm assuming Nvidia Nview for that machine) and go to the "multimonitor properties." It will likely be set to "clone" mode, which is fine for most things, but will not work for Blu-ray playback. Change it to output to the HDTV ONLY... disabling the laptop screen. Change the resolution if you need to to match your HDTV. Finally, put in a Blu-ray movie, and it should play fine through to your HDTV.

Once you have it working you can setup "hotkey" combinations that do all the work to switch back and forth between displays instantly, but, for now, its more important to just get it working.

sorry i didn't reply sooner, but that was it. Like you said I had to switch it from image clone to only output through the tv.

Thank you so much

Default Similar Situation

I have a Pavilion dv5-1017nr with similar problems. I tried to play a BD (Planet Earth) on a Sony Bravia through the DMI output. It would start and then stop with an error message in QuickPlay. It said something about copy protected. I can play the BD on my laptop but it is 15.4 and the speakers leave much to be desired. Would prefer to play on 1080i or p monitor with 5.1 home theater. HP on-line customer help chat said it can't be done with copy protected BDs. I'll try your suggestions next time I'm at that DMI monitor. Unfortunately my normal monitor doesn't have a DMI input and the laptop lacks both component and composite outputs.

Jeff,
Go to this link here on the HP Support site - it'll tell you about your problem and what to do: http://tinyurl.com/689f5m

Also, when inputting your system # into HP's Support page field, put your HP Part / Product # (usually has an ABA after it) in the field and not the model - this will take you to the more specific configuration for your system.

If you back out of that page to the Troubleshooting page, click on Display / Graphics and you'll see other resolutions for display issues as well.
