Default Quick questions for all you audiophiles

I have a PS3 with the latest firmware update for DTSHDMA. Now here are the questions to fully benefit the audio:

1. Must use HDMI.
2. Has to be v1.3 HDMI?
3. Receiver has to be "switching" and not "pass-through" for HDMI.
4. Receiver MUST be v1.3 HDMI.

I don't want to make any mistake on purchasing a receiver and/or buy one with all the bells and whistles while I could have bought one for a lesser price to enjoy DTSHDMA.

Thanks.

Pretty accurate. Just be careful as some offer HDMI switching, but are still passthrough for the audio. What is your budget? Or Post the receivers you are looking at. Someone here will tell you if it will do all the latest and greatest audio codecs

Why would he need an AVR with HDMI 1.3? The PS3 decodes TrueHD and DTS HD MA internally and sends as MPCM, which can be handled by any AVR with HDMI 1.1 or better, no?

HDMI 1.1 will do with a receiver that's happy with 192/96 PCM. If buying new models, it'll be hard to find an AVR that isn't 1.3. My gaming room has an older Pioneer VSX-84txsi that does just find with the PS3 as the A/V source and PCM as the medium.

Slightly related, you will need some 1.3 features to support Deep Color. Does the PS3 support those extensions?

Read A Guide to Home Theater Audio Codecs. All your questions about DTS HD MA, HDMI 1.3, PS3 decoding, and LPCM will be answered. Pay close attention to the conclusions at the end.

Is it not LPCM? But yes, HDMI 1.1 will work the same as 1.3 with the PS3.

You are correct. As said previously, most of the new receivers will have 1.3 capabilities. I've been looking at a 1.1 receiver to get a better model that is older for the same price as some of the lower level units (marantz 7001).

As a result I didn't feel that 1.3 should be excluded/singled out

Same thing, different acronyms. MPCM = Multi-channel PCM.

Okay. Thanks for all the inputs. I am going with the Onkyo SR606. I know I can get in on the net for @ $60 cheaper but I am scared if something goes wrong and go through all the crap of returning it or exchange it.

If there is a problem, you should easily be able to return it.
