Default Audio & Receiver Help

I finally bought the ps3 mainly for blu-ray but since I'm an occasional gamer, I get the best of both worlds...at least I thought.

So far I've watched two movies and both were in pro-logic IIx. The movie fires up in dolby digital then as soon as it starts, it changed. I have an Onkyo which does not pass HDMI audio. I know this is part of my problem...

However, why wouldn't I be able to pass DD5.1 thru optical? Granted, I did try another movie which seemed to be DD5.1. My best understanding of this is that the PS3 can't decode certain things and especially that I need HDMI 1.3.

So, what do I need in a receiver? Do I really need to buy a receiver after just buying my current one less than a year ago? I have a great setup but now with blu-ray I don't want to have a good picture and bad sound. Watching the movies in pro-logic is painful when your use to a regular dvd with nice sound. I want better sound, better picture which is why I bought blu-ray.

I don't have a ton of money so I was thinking of the new onkyo that supports TrueHD. Reviews are such that the video switching quality is not very good so that's out of the question. Everything else seems like I'm going to need to spend close to $700 or more.

Should I wait? Why are all movies not in DD5.1?? How do I make my current setup DD5.1 always?

I use Bitstream right now? LPCM doesn't seem to help. Either way without DD I can hear my speakers begging for more. The distortion of powerful scenes is not good.

On the optical part of the PS3 audio menu, do you have everything selected?

yep.. bitstream out over optical and let the receiver decode. That would be your best bet for your current situation.

If you did want to go the new receiver route, a good one can be had for under $400. Onkyo 605/606 (in Driver's sig), Yamaha RX-V663.

The reviews grade the upconversion of the receiver poorly. I leave it turned off. I watch std tv and use stretch function, or just HD channels.

I have DD 5.1 checked and then obviously the ones that are always checked.

Should I check them all? When I do I believe I get a warning saying it may cause damage to my speakers. Although maybe I'm thinking of when I was playing with the HDMI settings. It sucks because when I bought the receiver I didn't do my research so I didn't know it didn't pass audio.

If I'm going to buy a new receiver again, I'm going to do it right so although I don't want to spend a lot, it makes sense to splurge because I don't want to regret it again. Although my wife will kill me...lol

as slec said, set optical to bitstream.

make sure there is a checkmark next to 5.1 Dolby Digital and 5.1 Dts. (NOT AAC)

(ignore the warning sign)

I have those checked. It just doesn't work well when the movie appears to not have DD but rather has TrueHD.

TrueHD has DD embedded in it, so there shouldn't be an issue there... I read it as you hadn't tried optical and were asking the question.

Are you having the same issues going optical instead of HDMI for sound?

when you are playing the movie:
Press the Triangle button and go to A/V Settings

just to make sure it is set on bitstream. Then press "select" or "display" on the remote. It will show you what audio is playing...what does yours say?
