Default CNET News: "Why iTunes makes Blu-ray useless"

Before everyone jumps down my throat and kills me, I do not in any way agree with this.
http://news.cnet.com/8301-13506_3-10...CmoreStories.0
I have seen apple TV HD and to be honest, it is pretty terrible. How can anyone even make claims to how iTunes will claim Blu-ray as its next victim?

Like my signature line says, we are creatures of hard media. Downloads serve a different market segment.

There is an old business analogy. When you shop around for a service, go with the first one the others bad mouth, because they are the biggest competitive threat. Especially if the bad mouthing happens before you ask about it.

Don't let anti-blu-ray articles get to you. The majority of the world never sees them, or knows better as we do.

That's funny. Why don't people understand you can buy Blu-rays for less than $20 in most cases. If you're getting a new DVD that just came out, it'll probably cost that much anyways. If you have Blockbuster's mail service, you can rent Blu-ray's for as much as DVD renting costs. That's what I have. I don't understand "you're forced to go all the way to Blockbuster to rent the Blu-ray for $6 each" rant. Poor article.

I notice the same thing But again, seriously what planet or country this guy and Steve Jobs think there living in? Japan? South Korea? The U.S. is finally going to go fully digital for TV next year and by all estimate its going to be painful. I imagine 1080p and lossless thru the internet is going to be at least 10 to 15 years away and by then blu ray will be 5 or 10 Terabytes....

It'll be interesting to see what happens with the various review sites. I wasn't that surprised to see Apple TV (High-Def Gear) -- whatever that means -- listed along with the blu-rays at HDD. I've been expecting them to jump on the download bandwagon and split the site like they did with blu-ray and HD DVD. But, I am curious to see what happens at some of the other review sites. Basically, just interested to see how downloads are treated...as a competitor to blu-ray or something that exists along side of blu-ray or as something completely different.

I haven't really followed things since MP3s and other forms of downloadable music have gained popularity. Do they (review sites) review downloadable forms of music along CDs, etc. and discuss quality differences or do they just address the music (and don't get into the various forms of it)?

its just some pissed off HD-DVD fanatic who doesnt want blu-ray to succede for whatever reason, so he now wants apple tv to somehow wipe out blu-ray...funny though, that he forgets to mention you need to buy an apple tv set and those go for $229 for a 40gb and $329 for a 160gb...thats no cheaper than a blu-ray player

I think of Blu-ray disc as just the carrier for the technology, there will be something better out there, there will also be better quality video standards in the years to come. It's good for now, but I don't worship the bloody thing.

actually the fact blockbuster rents them is a highlight to me, their are many blu's i would like to watch more then once but not add to the collection and by renting them from blockbuster (5 whole dollars lol) i get to keep the things for two weeks or a month and a half if i wanna pay the extra $1.33 for restock.

i side note has me in an uproar: iron man wasn't in so i called the ONLY other local chain available, family video, "sorry sir we don't carry that format, im told sometime next year we MAY be adding them", no wonder i don't rent their anymore.

Lets see... Apple. Yeah, they killed off the CD, didn't they? I never see CDs in any stores whenever I go to them because, nobody buys CDs anymore. And now, Apples is probably ticked off that Blu-ray and DVDs are starting to include a digital copy for free mind you, which itunes would have sold for how much? I am not sure, but I think they are about $12. Looks like the DVD and Blu-ray companies are trying to take away some of that business from itunes to me.

I have said it before, there is a BIG difference in downloading songs on iTunes, which you can get individual songs if you don't want the whole album, which I am sure a majority of their customers do. Now with movies, i don't think people would be as comfortable downloading them. With iTunes, unlike other companies, If your hard drive crashes, you have lost them. Apple does not let you redownload stuff you have already purchased from them, you have to pay for it again!

I contacted Apple for its latest movie sales figures, but the company didn't provide anyway. Because of that, I'm forced to consider the fact that as of this past January, it had sold 7 million films on iTunes after 15 months of availability. Consider the fact that Blu-ray hit the 7 million units sold mark after 18 months, and it's quite obvious that people are ready and willing to download films instead of buying an expensive player and media to go with it.

Granted, the movies Apple has sold are standard definition and of the 2,500 films currently offered on iTunes, the 600 HD films can only be rented, but does that even matter?
Love that part.

What I want to know is - what TV is selling? Is it current episodes that have not released to DVD or Bluray yet? Are people who forgot to Tivo Heroes grabbing it the next day? Are people catching up on series that they discovered a few episodes in?

I have a feeling that a substantial section of ITunes video business is for stuff that hasn't released on any other format yet. It's easy to drive sales when you're one of the few places to go get last night's episode before next's weeks comes on....

I love it when these guys talk about a "suitable alternative to discs". What else is a computer hard drive but a disc? It's just a different (and far less reliable) disc, that's all!

Don Reisinger is an idiot, plain and simple.
He doesn't have one fact right.
He talks about Blu-ray's 8% market share the day after it had 20%
He talks about Apple's movie sales, notes they're all SD, says "does that matter?"

He's a complete arse, a total waste of your time and anyone else who clicks on the link.
