is there a portable Blu-ray with 10" HDTV hi-resolution LCD screen?
Please don't say laptops... because the smalles laptop with a built-in Blu-ray drive is at least 15" or bigger... looking for something really portable) Thanks! ![]() |

Even 720p is almost wasted unless you have a screen of 17". As long as it outputs at 1080p to an external TV, then all is not lost. Easy to take to friends homes without blu-ray and blow them away. ![]() The chip set just hasn't shrunk enough yet. |

(which I saw at the Sony store... and it looked amazing hooked up to a stand-alone Blu-ray player, even if it was only 11") |

Besides maybe some prototypes, the smallest 1080p screen I know about (actually, it's 1920x1200 pixels) is 15.4" diameter (which happens to be in my laptop

OLED is certainly the way to go to save battery power. But that 11" screen isn't even 720p. At least, that is what I read.

Yes, but unfortunately, the VGN-TT190UBX has only a 1366x768 display, so nu full benefit of 1080p Blu-ray discs

I think the whole point here is that a portable blu-ray player is almost pointless. ALMOST. For a player to be considered "portable" the screen size would have to be 8" or less. At 17" and above you are looking at notebook size players.
At 8" how much could be discerned from a 720 x 480p display vs 1080 x 720p? At that size, what is the benefit of 720p blu-ray over 480p DVD in terms of quality of picture? My best guesstimate would be "very noticeable". Assume you printed out a 1080 picture at 480 on 8" photo paper. The result would look great because the original is great. Then again, if the resolution is too high it might not scale down too nicely. Now print that same picture at 720 on 8" paper. You certainly will notice the detail is better. Portable blu-ray at 720p will have much higher bit rates, better color reproduction, and the most killer sound you ever heard in a portable player. Is it worth it? I believe so. There is still the question of how fast will BD-J movies load up? Processing power needs juice. We can save lots of power with OLED screens and probably lose it all back to internal components. The battery would still need to be sizeable to allow playing long movies like Titanic, or Lord of the Rings. Anything less than 4 hour play back time isn't "consumer-ready" in my opinion. It has been said before, but for the human eye to see the difference between a 1080p and a 720p lcd, you have to sit close enough to the display. An often used rule-of-thumb is 1.5 times the diameter, so for instance, if you want to buy a 32" 1080p lcd you will have to sit at a maximum of 4 feet (48") away from it, to see the advantage above 720p.
For my 15.4" 1080p lcd (actually wuxga), this means that I have to sit closer then roughly 2 feet away, which I usually am. By the way, for an 8" screen, this would translate to less then 1 foot away, which would still be reasonable, but about the minimal screen size to benefit from full-HD I.M.H.O. Any smaller then that (iPod, Blackberry), I would opt for SD quality on a VGA (480p) display, like i-Mate, oqo, etc. Regarding battery power, unfortunately most portable dvd-players offer only 1 battery at the time. If I use the Blu-ray player in my HP with the 2nd battery attached to the bottom, I can play movies for more then 6 hours ![]() Last edited by gekke henkie; 09-25-2008 at 04:20 PM. |

Please tell me you all are not that naive.
![]() For the 10 billionth time - it's not about 1080/720/480p resolutions. It's not about whether that screen shows HD. IT IS about the fact that people who are BLU exclusive that want to TRAVEL and have some movies - you have NO way to do so unless you have a laptop that can do it. A portable blu player would be very nice. That way you can watch blu's while your traveling. So, next time you see a thread asking about portable blu players, it's for the PORTABILITY, it's not about HD on a 7" screen - ok? Thanks! ![]() |

Sadly not long enough for me - it came up on the Sleeping Beauty comments also as someone asked why the heck is Disney putting a DVD copy with the BD.
This is probably THE most important fact to understand in the BD/DVD war. Portable DVD players are going to completely undercut BD addoption until we have BD portable players that are incredibly affordable or every BD comes with a free DVD. It's not a matter of wanting incredible resolution on a portable - it's a matter of wanting all of your titles to be portable (regardless of format). This isn't like DVD's initial adoption - you didn't have portable VHS players in cars that encouraged people to stay with VHS so that they could still use their entire libraby on the go. This will be THE biggest hurdle for BD in 2009 in my opinion. I hope more studios go the free DVD route like Disney is trying. |

Man, we are getting spoiled. A portable blu ray player on a 10" screen? I have a BD player on my laptop (15.4") and that's good enough. Like you guys mentioned, playing a blu ray disc on a 10" screen will not take any advantages of the blu ray disc's PQ. But I guess I can see those portable players coming out in the near future once standard DVDs become obsolete...

In fact DVD will not BE obsolete until there is no strong reason for the masses to buy DVDs. And right now, one of the strongest reasons for consumers to not buy BD is so that their collections aren't split between what can play in the family station wagon and what can't. While us early adopters may feel cool and cutting edge and like we're driving the conversion, our power pales in comparison to another demographic. Say it with me.... SOCKER.... MOMS..... ![]() |
