Default I miss the old James Bond...

Alright, let me make one thing clear before I get flamed:

I think Casino Royale was spectacular. In a lot of ways, it was one of (if not the) greatest action movie ever made. Still... I miss the "Bond" movies. I know I can't be the only one who still have a soft spot for silly one-liners, gadgets and cars. While I love Craig's Bond, I do hope to one day see the return of the 'cartoonish' Bond.

Am I the only one?

For the curious, I've seen all the Bond movies, and my favorite is Connery - and I still say Goldfinger is the great Bond movie.

When there are criminal masterminds who devise lavish plans to cripple or take over the world, to have a guy drive a car than can flip itself over is kind of insane. With the grave nature of the life Bond leads, the cartoonishness seemed misplaced. The James Bond Jr. show seemed more dangerous than some of the bond movies.

I also liked Casino Royale.

But I agree with you. I don't think the "new" formula for Bond can survive unless they lighten him up a little.

Maybe not necessary to bring back all the same one-liners but it would benefit by having a few more one-liners in the movie.

For instance, I really liked in Casino Royale when Bond nearly dies due to cardiac arrest but blasts back to life and then asks his girlfriend "are you OK?". Needs more humour like that.

My favorite Bond is Brosnan, followed by Moore.

The real Bond was Sean Connery in Dr. No when James Bond had to slap a *****.

When was that?

That sounds more like Mission Impossible III

It's in Casino Royale. About halfway in, he sips the poisoned drink, then runs out to his car to get the electro-shock-your-chest thing (sorry can't remember what they call those things). He doesn't press the button in time and passes out. Vesper comes to the car, presses the button, he revives, and asks "Are you ok?" He then returns to the game, where my personal favorite humorous line occurs. "That last hand nearly killed me."

Yes sir. You are correct sir.

By the way that Aston Martin was the best Bond car in a very long time.

I really like the edgy Bond, seems to me to be more realistic of what it would be like. My fave Bond is definitely Connery. Brosnan was one of the worst of the lot. Perhaps it was simply the others cast around him that made those films so bad.

On the comment of the one liners, gadgets and cars ... if I want one liners I throw in Austin Powers. The latest Bond had some nice cars in it and the upcoming release has a pretty sweet Austin in it... ok lets forget that Casino Royale had a POS Ford though.

I cant wait for Bond to dish some serious revenge on the guy at the end of CR, which is where the new film picks up.

I think it's a natural progression for the character. Starts out as a brash hard-headed agent, gains experience and becomes the smooth Bond we all know and love, and then gets cocky and over-confident and ends up in a situation that even he can't handle.

I can't wait to see how they evolve the character in the next 20 bond movies.

Evolution of the character is something I've often thought about. Quantum of Solace is the first real "sequel" movie in the franchise. It's easy to replace actors when all the previous Bond movies have been pretty much standalone, aside from the offhand reference or two. So with this new push for an ongoing continuity, what will happen with Craig doesn't come back? Do they go for another reboot, or just recast him and go with it?

I hear ya, I appreaciate the older ones. I think I can only really appreciate them because the newer ones have "grown up".

Some of the Moore Bond movies really blew. Goldeneye was great, but after that they went down hill. Dalton wasn't bad, the tone of the movies was similar to what we have now. I am a huge fan of the current Bonds.

Imo the reason Brosnan bond movies quickly went downhill is because of the silly, "cartoonish" nature they had. There is a fine line between silly and stupid in an action movie. You need to have a little backbone in a Bond movie. I think a mix in between is best.

I missed the old Bond from 1971 to 2005, and found him back in full form in 2006. I assume you speak about the farce that was James Bond from 1971 to 2005. That wasn't James Bond, but the Disney version.

To me Roger Moore will always be the definitive James Bond, but I really like Craig as well. I'm looking forward to Quantum of Solace in November.

...Or DIES. I mean, he's got to be getting pretty old. Looks to be in his 40s. That's "one bad meal from a heart attack" range....

Roger Moore was 58 when he did A View to a Kill which is my favorite Bond movie of all time, Sean Connery was 53 when he did Never Say Never Again, and Brosnan was 49 when he did Day Another Day. Daniel Craig is only 40 this year, so I'd say he's got a long way to go until he's done making Bond flicks.

I really liked the gadgets when they were cool and not really cartoony :/

I am sure they will bring all that stuff back eventually!

A view to a kill if your favorite Bond ? A movie that constantly cut between Moore and a stand-in / stunt double with a red wig that doesn't look one iota like him ? I love Moore but come on, it was one of the worst badly directed / edited / written Bond ever.

Bond is who Bond is made to be in every era. The 60's were corny so Bond was Corny. The 70's were hokey and so was Bond. That said, I wasn't too hot on The Brosnon years.

As far as gadgets go, I hope Sony tones down the product placement this time around.
