Default Zulu Coming November 8th in UK

Here's the Amazon.UK link:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Zulu-Blu-ray-Michael-Caine/dp/B001CTBGNS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1222282162&sr=1-3

Why isn't this coming out in the United States?

Does anyone know if you can buy BD movies from the UK and play them on BD players sold in the US?

There are a lot of movies that only came out in the UK and then come out a few months later in the US.
Like:
Sweeney Todd
Diary of the Dead

By saying "came out" do you mean released on Blu-Ray? This movie "came out" in 1964 and is considered a classic. It was Michael Caine's first movie.

Yes you can buy BDs from the UK, though not all play on US players. It depends if the disc is region free or not. No one knows if Zulu is region free yet since it hasn't been released. Wait a little closer to release date to find out if Zulu will be region free.

Thanks for the tip. I'll probably wait a bit longer in case it does get released soon in the U.S. as it's one of my personal top 5 movies of all time.

In addition to the region issue, another point you might need to check out is whether the BD includes any extras in standard definition and, if so, whether they are in NTSC or PAL. Your US BD player would probably not be able to play PAL material.

As it's a major Hollywood studio (Paramount) that is releasing Zulu on BD in the UK, the likelihood is that any SD extras would be in NTSC, since all European BD players and TVs support NTSC as well as PAL so there would be no reason to pay for NTSC-PAL conversion for existing NTSC items. For example, on Warner BDs released in Europe, SD extras are in NTSC (the packaging lists the SD video format as 480i/p).

However, this point would be more of an issue for a BD released in the UK (or elsewhere in Europe) by a smaller independent releasing company, especially if the film concerned was not produced by one of the major Hollywood studios.

The Amazon web page shows the products specs as Format: PAL so I assume this means the movie is formatted in PAL. I doubt there would be much extra content. I have the SD and all it includes is the movie trailer.

I can't imagine this movie never coming out in the US on BD, so I will wait.

No - the movie itself can't be formatted in PAL as it's in high definition on the BD. PAL and NTSC are both standard definition formats.

Amazon's web pages are totally misleading in describing BDs as PAL or NTSC - it's simply because they use the same web page format for both DVDs and BDs, and quite honestly I don't think they have the first idea about the technical details involved. I've previously e-mailed them to point out this foolishness, but of course they haven't done anything about it.

You may well be right that the Zulu BD won't include any significant extras, in which case the only issue for you to be concerned about would be whether it is an all-Region disc or Region B only.

I've just taken a look at the Amazon page for the BD of Zulu, and the cover picture indicates that it will be a 2-disc set, so that suggests that there will be several extras included. (Just to confuse us even more, the information further down the same page shows the number of discs as 1, but I suspect the picture is probably the more reliable guide in this case.)

I would imagine that most, if not all, of the extras will be in SD. So for owners of US players, it will be of interest to find out whether they are in PAL or NTSC. I would hope and expect that they'll be in NTSC, but you never know.

If someone buys this release, please post the details. Is it region free and can everything play on a player here in the US?

Thanks

ive already got this release, unfortunataley i cannot test to see if it plays in a US player but i would assume it would as its a Paramount title?

The audio is only 2.0 Dolby Digital, but thats to be expected seeings its age.

PQ is really good, looks stunning!!

Features wise, theres around 6/8 i'll post more later when i get a chance to watch them.

Feel free to post some questions and ill do my best to answer them.

Looking forward to the review.

As for questions...mostly I'm concerned that both the movie and the special features will play in the US and that it has good picture and sound.

Does the picture display in its original widescreen? Many of the scenes depend on this for the full effect (i.e., when the Zulus line up on the hilltops).

Dolby 2.0 is fine. The film was made 45 years ago so obviously surround sound is not an option (unless it's simulated).

Thanks

Hi All,

I am in the US, and we are discussing Zulu now in our 2300+ Hi-Def discussion group at Yahoo. A huge fan of this film posted his first impressions (Dave). If you'd like to come over and join in the discussion of this and other films, as well as get exclusive discount codes negotiated with various companies, enter "digitalbabe" in your join request at http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/thebombshelter/.

I myself am expecting my Zulu BD today from Amazon UK, I hope the extras play!

Enjoy!

Cool Zulu release

I've just received my BD of Zulu, put it into the player to check out all aspects of the disc, and it does look stunning. One problem though - there seems to be a total lack of subtitles - nothing for the main dialogue track, and nothing for the audio commentary, despite turning them on to test via the menu. Has anyone else found this problem, or have I simply missed pushing the right button in the right order?

Thanks
