Default Blu-ray Variations L.A. Confidential

So I am perusing the upcoming releases and I see L.A. Confidential
is being release...well actually re-released and I don't know all the ins
and outs of the various formats. Wonder if someone can clue me in...

version 1 already out

Version 2 to be released on the 29th

Version 2 appears to be a Japan issue with different audio properties.
As well as using different Codec Mpeg 4???

Any info would be helpful.

It looks like the rights to distribute LA Confidential rest with Kadokawa Herald Pictures in Japan, not Warner Bros. This is likely due to the film having been made by Regency Enterprises, not Warner proper.

I can't vouch for the quality of Kadokawa Herald video releases, but Nippon Herald (bought out by Kadokawa in 2006) would sometimes release greatly superior DVDs to their USA counterparts. The title which jumps to mind immediately would be their DVD of True Lies.

However, Japan releases are rarely if ever English friendly. Even though they usually carry the English soundtrack, the menus are always Japanese-only and the supplements are hit-and-miss.

What are you confused about exactly? The first link lists the North American release. The second list the Japanese release.

The Japanese Version is done by TFC and uses a different Video and Audio Codec. It could possibly be a better version. Mine shipped today, so hopefully I can help give feedback as to which version is better.

From what I've read the Japanese release is inferior and is 1080i.

It was initially announced as 1080i MPEG-2 and Lossy DTS. That was later changed to 1080p AVC with English DTS-HD MA.

www.amazon.co.jp or www.hmv.co.jp or www.yesasia.com. As for the Menu thing, I am not sure and won't have a definite answer until Thursday or Friday. I would assume all the menus are in Japanese.

I wonder if any of those variations would make the movie actully interesting, because I found it lousy and boring.

Well the movie has a great reputation and I enjoy it. Love the shootout scene at the end.

Please do, I am eagerly awaiting your impressions of this Blu-ray. I thought the Warner BD was good but I did think there was slight room for visual improvement.

The overall idea was good but I found it predictable all the way to the end, and I will ommit the spoilers, those who have seen it know what I mean. Maybe blu-ray does miracles for it.

Then why even comment? Nowhere was the OP asking for a critique of the movie. You've got a few of these posts racked up already, and they're pointless.

If there's anything that drives me nuts, is people going into a thread about a movie they DON'T LIKE, and bashing it. Stop trolling.

This is a great flick that I really enjoyed on Blu as I had never seen it before. I thought the PQ was pretty good, so I'm not sure why you'd want to import.

I will be looking at the US release release tomorrow and flipping back and forth between the 2 releases to see which looks better. I have to say, the Japanese release is very nice. Comes in a Black Blu-ray case and comes with 2 BD, one with the movie, the second with the extras. I will try to post pictures of the box if I can find my camera. Overall, I would give the picture and sound 4.5/5. Very nice colors, detail, blacks, grain structure and the sound was very well done.

Yes, Menus are in Japanese. The back also says Region Free, but I will check that myself tomorrow.
