Hey guys i've been running my PS3 directly through my Denon AVR 988 reciever via HDMI. And i know the reciever can decode the latest HD audio formats. But anytime I watch a movie that has, say Dolby HD or DTS HD, it just says Dolby Digital or just plain DTS on the reciever display. I have that DTS demo disk, and every track on there is using the DTS HD format. My question is, is my reciever properly decoding the formats and just displaying it wrong? Or should it display Dolby HD, DTS HD?? My Onkyo 806 Displays what it is correctly, and my old denon 987 didnt support it, but still ran the digial formats via optical, just not the new HD ones, i replaced my old 987 for the 988 and hopefully i am getting the sound difference. Thanks! What should my PS3 audio settings be set to? Im sure i have them right but maybe im not doing something right.

PS3 should be set to PCM since it decodes the Dolby HD and DTS HD codecs, the PS3 does not pass these via bitsteam. The reciever will never show these codecs on the display, you should see Multichannel PCM instead. Check the display from the PS3 (triangle = options) and you can see what the PS3 is decoding and outputing.

I have it set to PCM, and the old denon used to say Multi Channel when ever i tried any of those formats. This new 988 says Dolby Digital for Dolby TrueHD and just DTS for DTS HD..... im gonna check the PS3 and see what it says.

PS3 HD audio will only ever display as PCM or Mutichannel on a receiver. But, if you are bitstreaming in order to see the Dolby Digital and/or DTS light up on the receiver then you will not be getting HD audio. Do make sure that your BD Audio Output setting reflects the "Linear" option in order to get HD audio working. |

Ok i figured it out! I still had the optical cable hooked up on my PS3 and denon, and my guess is that it was defaulting to Optical insted of HDMI, once i unplugged the Optical my reciever now reads Multi Channel. Thanks for all the quick reply's!
