I just bought one. I went through the speaker setup, but I think I need to learn a bit more to get the input settings the way I want them. I am not fond of the setup program. The sound quality is great. I am still getting used to the remote. I got mine at a Best Buy about 50 miles away. They only had one in the back. I did my research and picked the 1909. There is always going to be better buys on older models but this was the one for me. How do you like yours so far?

I am thinking of buying the 1909 and have a question.. If you hook up PS3 and SAT to the receiver through HDMI, then send HDMI from receiver to TV will the TV also have sound through the HDMI OUT? or do I have to hook up a secondary sound cable to the tv just to get audio to both the tv and receiver?
I am hoping that once I hook up the HDMI IN/OUT both receiver and tv will have sound? Thanks |

That's a great question and I think the answer is ... it won't send out the sound.
On my 788 you choose if you want to process the HDMI audio or send it out to the TV. (The choices are TV or AMP) so you would have to toggle that each time you wanted to use the TV speakers and reset it each time you would rather use the AVR as a sound processor. Kind of a drag... I would love to be wrong about this... I'll double check but seems like when I choose "TV" I wasn't getting sound anymore from the AVR and there was no "both" option. -Brian |

I can't believe that we spend $500-650 on a receiver and it can't even play sound to the tv/reciever at the same time through HDMI hookups..
Other than this, how do you all like your 1909? Any complaints/problems? From what I have read online this seems like a great receiver. |

Well,
I've got the 788 which is similar but older than the 1909. I love it. I'm fully happy with it. Sure,... would be nice to have control of sending HDMI audio to the TV and the Surround System but in my case... I would never be sending the audio to a TV so it doesn't matter. (I use a projector so it's more like a monitor than a TV.) -Brian |

Well I got my 1909 today.. (They left it on my porch for anyone to steal) But no one did.
I did find that I can select input source then put my receiver on stand by which turns the speakers off then sends the hdmi signal right to the TV so at night or when I am just watching cable tv I can have just tv speakers which is great. At least I don't have to hook up other audio cables or have my receiver/speakers on all the time to watch tv. I must say I was really missing out not having lossless audio before.. This is my first time having a receiver that can play the HD Audio. I am more than impressed with the quality of the HD Audio and the 1909 receiver. Very happy with my choice of the Denon 1909. I will research tomorrow at work to see if I am missing any settings when I set it up but it sounds fantastic already. Now what to do with my old (non hdmi) Yamaha receiver that I replaced.. is there a market for these at all? |

Setup is not straight forward... I've been struggling the whole Sunday afternoon trying to get some sound from the TV.. no success... I put a HDMI from TV to amp (to the Monitor HDMI connection) but nothing comes... On the other hand, the PS3 works fine with a HDMI link (and get amazing sound when optimised - watch Lord of the rings... you are in the battle.. scaring.. ![]() Do I have to use an audio cable in addition to the HDMI connection to watch TV ?????? ![]() ![]() It's so frustrating !!! PLEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASE..... HELPPPPPPPPP |

What I finally did was hook up the PS3 (HDMI) to the 1909 then (HDMI) from receiver to the TV.
I can't listen to sound from both TV and Reciever at the same time but if I turn the receiver on standby it turns the Receiver speakers off and passes audio/video to the TV speakers. So I can listen to the TV speakers at night or if I am just watching TV and listen to Reciver speakers if I am watching a movie.. which is more than enough sound (don't need TV speakers then). I did have to turn on the HDMI Power Control or something named similar to get the standby to function this way on the reciever. Am in love with Lossless audio now and refuse to buy any blu ray that does not have it. |

I only have my surround system on when I watch movies and play PS3. I do have my HDMI from my PS3 to the receiver, HDMI from my receiver to the TV. I think there is a setting to fix what you want to do. OR I think you can use an optical cable and make it work.

How many HDMI slots do you have on your TV? I know my TV has one HDMI that is made for DVI->HDMI cable and it expects the audio to come from other cables when you use that certain HDMI. The other HDMI hookup on my TV is normal and accepts both video/audio.
Another thing I have noticed about the Denon 1909. I was using the Audyssey Settings Dynamic EQ/Volume and loved the results but on some movies I can not use this mode because of loud pops and instead have to switch the mode to Manual with Dynamic EQ/Volume off.. This still sounds good but not sure why some soundtracks have this effect. Transformers - No problems at all with Dynamic EQ Iron Man - Can't use Dynamic EQ at all.. sounds like crap and loud pops Eragon - Can't use Dynamic EQ Troy - No problems King Arthur - No Problems Haven't tested all my movies with HD sound yet as I just recently got the Denon 1909. Anyone else found this problem as well or do you just use Manual mode always? |

Actually, I have 3 HDMI but I have not checked if they are all the same. I assum it... But I will check tonight...
And actually, I also have a funny effect... when using my universal remote and switching on the tv the sound is cut... I have to move it up (or down) to hear a little "Click" from the denon and the sound comes !! weird... anybody has experienced that ? Is it another "HDMI side effect" ? |
