With his receiver, he cannot get audio via HDMI...

Keep it the way it is, be sure that you select optical for the audio out and bitstream insteam of pcm on the audio options of the ps3.

When you watch a movie, select a dolby or dts soundtrack and not the pcm if you want surround sound. If you select pcm you will only get 2ch via optical.

BTW, You won't get lossless sound with that receiver.

OR,

Return the 6130, and get the 6160. Plug it the way JJxiv1215 said and you will have lossless sound and access to all soundtracks (PCM, DTS HD MA, Dolby TrueHD).

The second option would be the best one!

HDMI is for both audio and video however not all receivers with HDMI connectivity can use the audio part...

That's odd... Is it not HDMI 1.1 or better? If it is, he should be able to send PS3-decoded TrueHD/DTS MA or raw PCM via HDMI to the AVR, no?

The 6130 has HDMI switching with 1080p video pass-through, from the manual
Audio signals input at the HDMI jack are not output from any speaker terminals but output from the connected video
monitor.
To enjoy the sound from speakers connected to this unit,
–make an analog or digital connection besides the HDMI connection (see page 16).
–mute the volume of the connected video monitor.

Lossless would be the best, and all lossless codecs have the dd and dts core. Your movies probably had the pcm selected which on your system would only give you 2 channels. Also make sure dd and dts are selected under your audio options on the ps3.

Do you have the PS3 set to bitstream and what post-processing do you use on your receiver?

TRUE HD has the dd in it. so your reciever can do the dd and dts part.

Normally, there should be a lossy Dolby digital (even if it's not in the selection) that plays when you select the TrueHD track. So you definitely should be able to get surround sound in your current configuration (check your ps3 audio settings).

And lossless is GOOD! :P

Lossy tracks as Dolby digital and DTS (core) are limited respectively at 640 kbps and 1.5 mbps, which means that some information is loss in order to meet the limited bandwidth. DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD tracks are lossless soundtracks meaning that they are identical to the master tracks with no information loss. They also allow 8 full range channels (the ".1" channel is a full range channel). The data rate depends on the tracks for example an eight-channel 24-bit/48 kHz runs on average at 4.7 Mbps (source)

LCPM soundtracks are uncompressed soundtrack which are identical to the master like the DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD but they take more space since there is no compression. DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD are uncompressed to pcm by the player and the receiver.

First off, what you're explaining is all channel stereo. That's not the goal of surround sound. There should be many parts in a movie that aren't going to have voices and the same "noises" coming from all of the speakers. Surround sound is supposed to place you in the action and make you feel like you're part of the movie.

When you're playing the movie, press select to see what track is playing. Did you see my question about what post-processing mode your receiver is on?

You must have your receiver to something like "5 ch stereo". You need to put it at "Straight" (5 on your remote from the manual...)

straight on the receiver and bitstream on the ps3 should work out!

You can try the sound field options for movies (spacious or dramatic) but for my taste I prefer to leave those alone

I hope it works out for you! And if you still can, consider the 6160 instead of the 6130, you won't be deceived by lossless sound!
