Question: What director made you aware of direction? Capra, Coppola, Lucas? Who and why...?

I actually didn't start becoming an avid film watcher until 3 or 4 years ago. Without a doubt though the first Director that made me aware of directing was Alfonso Cuaron for his work on Children of Men. His single shot sequences were absolutely mind blowing and ultimately made an impression on me. Danny Boyle is probably the Director that's made the biggest impression on me so far. After the year 2000, he's been nearly perfect. 28 Days Later, Millions, Sunshine, and Slumdog Millionaire are all among my favorite films.

I'm really looking forward to Lincoln, which he'll be directing. I think it comes out in 2011, starring Liam Neeson as Honest Abe, and is somewhat based on Team of Rivals (a great book...even before it was mentioned about 1.2 million times in the last few weeks, with Obama apparently trying to imitate Lincoln). |

I have to say Spielberg. There is something about his films that speak to me and moves me. And while I enjoy his huge films like Jurassic Park and the Indiana Jones films my favorites are Schindler's List, Munich, Amistad, The Color Purple, Saving Private Ryan and Minority Report.
Actually, I like 'em all. Even Always and 1941. Who am I kidding. There has been a long standing critizism that he manipulates you to feel certain things while watching his films. But that is actually what I love about them. Isn't that the purpose of waching a movie? That for two hours you become involved with the characters and plot? But that's just me. |

Strangely enough, it was John Woo. In Face/Off I noticed his use of slow motion in several scenes. The scene that really sticks out in my mind is the scene at the funeral with the doves, the guns, and the orchestral music.
I then re-watched Broken Arrow and noticed it there as well. Obviously he used it in Mission Impossible 2 also. |
